Understanding Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer tends to develop slowly over many years. Early stages of the disease rarely cause symptoms, so it often goes undetected. Stomach cancer is more common in men than women. They are usually over 60. Often, they are overweight. One of the major risk factors is heavy drinking, which means consuming more than three drinks per day. Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco, can more than double your risk of getting stomach cancer. Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria is considered a risk factor, along with a family history. Finally, we now know that ethnicity can play a role.

Dr. Rebecca Wiatrek: Well, the cause of gastric cancer, like most cancers, isn't just one thing. It's multiple. There are several things that can cause your stomach to be inflamed, like reflux or an infection or other things that can put you at risk.

Dr. Rebecca Wiatrek: So unfortunately, the symptoms with gastric cancer, which makes it so tricky to diagnose, are that they mimic a lot of things. A lot of the population has GI upset after eating a lot of food or feeling poorly after eating spicy foods or having nausea or vomiting intermittently. I think what happens is when you see that happening more often, and it's a change, or you start to lose weight, and you're doing the same thing that you've been doing for a long time, that's something to be alarmed with. So it's something you don't want to ignore if it's changing most of the time. If you have GI upset or changes in your GI system, that's going to be other causes.

Treatment and Recovery

Following his diagnosis, Toby Keith embarked on a rigorous treatment and recovery journey. He underwent surgery, which was a critical step in his fight against cancer. In addition to surgery, Keith underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These treatments were designed to target remaining cancer cells and prevent recurrence.

Along with stopping tobacco use and limiting alcohol intake, diet is critical to helping prevent stomach cancer. Avoid foods preserved with salt such as salted fish and meat as well as pickled vegetables. Processed, smoked or charcoaled meat should be eaten in moderation. Eating fruits, especially citrus fruits, and raw vegetables may lower the risk of stomach cancer.

Yes. The good news is we have emerging treatments for stomach cancer and our specialists often use a multi-pronged treatment approach. This includes surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy based on the molecular profile of the tumor, and radiation.

The Role of Nutrition During Cancer Care

Managing weight during cancer care plays a crucial role in supporting a patient’s health and recovery. For many cancer patients, maintaining a healthy weight can be challenging. Treatments like chemotherapy often affect appetite and nutrient absorption. It’s essential to focus on nutrient-dense foods. Fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains help support the body’s strength and immune system during treatment. Patients should aim for balanced meals. These meals should avoid excessive sugar and unhealthy fats.

A nutritionist is key in developing a personalized eating plan during cancer treatment. They create customized plans to meet the specific needs of each patient. The nutritionist monitors changes in weight and suggests dietary adjustments. This helps manage side effects and ensures the patient gets essential nutrients. Consulting with a nutritionist can make navigating dietary needs easier and more effective.

Dr. Joseph McLaughlin, MD, notes that while risk factors such as age and hereditary conditions cannot be modified, many others are within a person’s power to change. “Not using tobacco, cutting back on or eliminating alcohol consumption, and reducing weight all are steps that will reduce the risk not just for stomach cancer but also for more common forms of the disease, such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer,” says Dr. McLaughlin, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist who practices at RCCA’s Manchester, CT office.

The cancer specialist adds, “Reducing cancer risk isn’t just about what you lose or give up. It’s also about what you embrace. For example, there is evidence that a diet high in fruits and raw vegetables can reduce the risk for gastric cancer. This sort of plant-based diet also has been shown to be beneficial in preventing other forms of cancer as well as cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Rebecca Wiatrek: I get this question asked by my patients a lot. I mean, for all cancers. And I think the answer I give is usually the same number one, which we talked about before. Don't ignore new symptoms. Don't just say, hey, yeah, I'm finally losing weight. Go get a workup by your doctor. The other thing you can do is live a healthy lifestyle. I mean, that helps prevent heart disease, liver disease, pretty much all the diseases that will get you as you age. You want to exercise, eat your fruits and vegetables. Don't smoke.
