As his activity levels decreased, his weight began to climb, reaching a peak of 26 stone and four pounds.
His health had gotten so bad that one day his surgeon said that if he did not lose the excess weight, he would need major surgery and might never walk again. Further complicating matters, Toby's wife, Rosa, became severely ill in 2011, requiring him to become her carer. In 2017, she was in a soma for seven days, and on top of this, Toby also had their daughter, Lara, to look after. The combination of physical limitations, caregiving responsibilities, and personal challenges led to a cycle of poor sleep, convenient takeout food, and further weight gain. He explained: "I ended up having a shoulder decompression and scoliosis and kyphosis when you get the postural rounding of the shoulders and the cracked vertebrae. So, as you can imagine, that was the end of me playing rugby."

After his friend’s 40th birthday party, someone sent him a photo of it, and in the picture his friend looks like a small child standing next to him-like he’d become this hulking monster with gray-hued skin. Toby joined Ultimate Performance, where he worked with a trainer to address his specific physical limitations and goals. He explained he had a look at a couple of gyms and met the manager of Ultimate Performance. He said: "When I first went back to the gym, I was a little bit nervous because I knew what a mess I was in, I was completely imbalanced. For example, my leg hadn’t recovered from when I broke it, so little things like the balance test was a struggle."
Initially, the focus was on simply increasing his daily steps. For the first four weeks, walking 10,000 steps a day was a real effort. Soon, though, I was up to 15,000 and then 20,000. It got easier, and seeing those numbers climb was a real motivator. He gradually increased his activity levels, eventually walking 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day. In the gym, he focused on lifting weights, emphasizing proper form and time under tension over the amount of weight lifted. He said: "In the gym itself, I was basically lifting heavy things and I eventually got stronger. The weights got heavier, which actually stopped all the skin going baggy", Tony explained. "Outside of the gym, I put a lot of work in. I walked 15 to 20,000 steps a day, as the minimum, in combination with eating properly."
Diet
Toby also made significant changes to his diet. He learned to prioritize quality proteins and pay attention to his carbohydrate intake. He swapped beer for water and focused on eating nutritious foods instead of convenient takeout.

He said: "Before I lost weight, I probably came across as a little bit moody or grumpy. And I think now I’m back to being happy. I can run around with the little one and I started playing football on a Tuesday night."
He is now medication and pain-free, plays football one and week and can run around with his young daughter. He has regained his energy, confidence, and overall sense of well-being. He said: "I probably appear more confident because I’m pain-free and medication free, and I can actually sleep properly. I have a general sense of well-being now and am much more focused."
