Introduction
The TLC show 1000-Lb Sisters has documented the weight loss journeys of the Slaton sisters, Tammy and Amy, since 2020. However, they aren't the only ones who have experienced significant transformations. Their siblings, including Misty Slaton Wentworth and Amanda Halterman, have also embarked on their own paths to better health. While Misty appeared on the show from season 1, Amanda joined in season 4. Together, Misty and Amanda decided to undergo bariatric surgery in season 5.
Misty's Journey: Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Success
Misty Slaton Wentworth's weight loss journey has been a significant part of the 1000-Lb Sisters narrative. Although she appeared on the show from the first season, she finally had gastric bypass surgery in 2023. One of the main reasons Misty waited until season 5 to get bariatric surgery was her health condition. Misty was suffering from diabetes amid her weight struggles. She had to wait until 1000-lb Sisters season 5 for clearance from her doctor. Due to this, she was not approved for her procedure until she was off the medications. She also had to deal with her habit of smoking.
Fortunately, Misty and Amanda kicked their nicotine addiction. In March 2023, they had back-to-back procedures on the same day. Her weight loss impressed many people. Her weight-loss journey was inspired by her siblings' successes. Misty's appearance changed dramatically, and she was able to stop taking diabetes medication.
Many praise Misty for being one of the most successful among the siblings. She battled her fears and dealt with complications from undergoing bariatric surgery, and ultimately dropped over 400 pounds.
Amanda's Path: Second Chances and Continued Progress
Amanda Halterman's journey is also noteworthy. Amanda joined in season 4 after her messy and arduous divorce. She had surgery in 2014 and lost over 300 lbs. The star had divorced Jason Halterman, and the court finalized the divorce in August 2022. Amanda and Jason have four sons together. But now the couple is living separately. Amanda has lost more weight since her first surgery. The surgery isn’t without risks, especially for Amanda, as it is her second time.

The Risks and Rewards of Bariatric Surgery
Misty and Amanda had decided to go for bariatric surgery in season 5. The duo revealed they had “been going to see Dr. Smith.” After that, they revealed the risks, which included operation table deaths. Misty had the surgery in March 2023. Dr. Smith had even posted a clip of it on Instagram.
The Slaton Family's Shared Experiences
Raised in Kentucky by their mom Darlene alongside siblings Chris, Misty and Amanda, "We grew up very poor," Amy, 37, said on the premiere episode of their TLC show 1000-lb Sisters. "We grew up with fast food mostly. But if we didn’t have fast food, the church would give us food. There was five kids, so our mom worked three jobs. We didn’t really get much love and affection growing up. It was actually quite the opposite. We got told we were stupid, we were lazy."
However, the sisters had a close relationship with their grandmother, who passed away when Amy was 10 and Tammy was 11. "My grandma was so important to me. She made me feel like I was no different from anybody else," Tammy shared on the episode. "After my grandma died, food was the only enjoyment we had."
Tammy's Perspective on Sharing Their Story
“By us putting our stories out there, we’re helping others,” Tammy, who also underwent skin removal surgery earlier this year, continued. "We’re helping others to see that they can lose weight too. They’re not alone. They thank us for putting our story out there. However, Tammy doesn’t regret having these moments captured, even her heated arguments with Amy and her other siblings."I wouldn’t change any of it,” she said on Creative Chaos. "Even the fighting with my siblings, that’s how we grew. That’s made me a different person. Fighting with the family, I don’t want to anymore.
