In reality, the family that they were referring to is biracial, as is Talia. In the show, Jade’s mother, Cocoa (played by Tia Mowry), is both Black and white.

“I remember looking at the comments and thinking, Oh, my God! I have to prove to them that I’m mixed. They don’t know I'm mixed,” Talia says. “I have to get it out there that I'm mixed.” She was overcome with anxiety. She worried the backlash would result in the show being canceled before it even aired, and it made her feel as though she needed to prove her Blackness.

“I was genuinely fearful of that fact - that people thought I was white or too light would end up getting the show canceled," Talia recalls. "I had this huge burden put on me. I felt like I was ruining this for everybody.” As we know from the wig debacle, the reactions weren't much better after the series aired. The day Family Reunion debuted on Netflix, Talia stayed up until midnight to binge-watch the entire season. The next morning, she posted about the premiere on her social media accounts, but her announcement was met with more negativity. “I literally sat in a chair and cried, and I deleted Instagram,” says Talia. “This was the day my show came out. It should’ve been the happiest day of my life.”

Thankfully, her IRL mom reached out to her TV mom, Mowry, who had similar experiences being biracial and growing up in Hollywood. Mowry was able to offer Talia some insight: “It was the most comforting conversation I have ever had,” Talia says of her pep talk with Mowry. “Having somebody be so honest and real and blunt - it truly got me through all of that.” When presented with obstacles, Talia still ruminates on Mowry’s encouraging words: “Every time I just look back and think, It’s not personal, it’s not personal."

“It took a huge toll on my mental health,” Talia says of the custodial dispute. “I went from being an incredibly happy little girl to being the most depressed I had ever been.”

For Talia, her anxiety and ADHD presented immense challenges in the classroom. She recalls feeling so overcome with anxiety that she often struggled to focus and even read. “I have struggled since I was very young," Talia says. "I was actually pulled out of almost every school that I was in as a child. I literally could not do school work in a classroom. My mom would have to pick classes with, like, 10 kids in it, and even that ended up not working.”

Anxiety followed Talia through most of her teen years. She admits that she began to accept the constant depressive state she was in as her fate, especially after a particularly rough 2019 and 2020. “I can’t remember a day in 2020 when I didn’t wake up in a panic attack or feeling anxiety,” Talia says. “I was incredibly suicidal. I had gotten back into a really bad [self-harm] habit that I had when I was younger, which was really disappointing for me.”

Though last year was dark in many ways, it also represented a turning point. After being hospitalized in July for a liver and gallbladder infection, which Talia says was caused by antidepressants, she sought other ways to manage her mental health conditions, including spirituality and alternative medicine. “I started to open up more to spirituality and learned to enjoy my own company,” she explains.

Today, Talia is in a much different place, which allows her to focus on thriving as opposed to simply surviving. At 19, she now credits her mental health conditions with molding her into the person she is. “I look forward to every day,” she says. “I never thought I would be here.”

But this transformation did not occur overnight. Talia worked daily to reach this pinnacle, and she can now look back on negative experiences, which she refers to as “lessons,” with appreciation. If she could share advice with anyone struggling with their mental health, the actor says she would offer two things: One, time heals all wounds; two, just “take a pause.”

“When things get really, really dark, and you feel like you just want to end it all, take a pause,” says Talia, who proudly sports a semicolon tattoo for suicide prevention. “Recuperate. Do what you have to do to find yourself.
