Slushii's Journey: Music, Transformation, and Weight Loss

Slushii, whose real name is Julian Scanlan, is an electronic artist hailing from Mount Laurel, New Jersey. The Los Angeles-based producer and genre-bending visionary has captivated audiences with his unique sound and relatable themes. But Slushii's journey is more than just a musical one; it's a story of personal transformation, self-discovery, and even weight loss.

Finding Solace in Music

Why do we listen to music? We all have our own answers, but for many of us it’s about wanting something to relate to, something to make us feel less alone. Growing up in a Philadelphia suburb, Julian Scanlan was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at a young age. He had a hard time making friends, was bullied, and grew up an outcast. In his darkest moments, he took solace in music.

Before embracing the Slushii moniker, Julian explored his musical talents under different aliases. Following his departure from Deuteronomy, he began to make original works and remixes under the alias of DJ Swoon. A remix of OneRepublic's "If I Lose Myself" and "Rasta Pasta," a song collaborating with Sean Sauce, each got hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube. After the termination of the DJ Swoon SoundCloud account, Julian began producing under the moniker Slushii.

'Out of Light': A Beacon of Hope

Slushii's music often explores profound themes and emotions. Out of Light begins with a feeling of profound hope, as the spoken intro to “Into the Light” speaks of “the light that remains a beacon of hope for generations to come.” As the intensity builds and then drops there’s also a sense of wistful nostalgia with the line, “Don’t you ever wish you could go back?”.

The album delves into feelings of self-doubt and the desire for escape. On “Someone Else” Slushii sings (and yes, it’s him singing underneath the pitch-shifting) of wanting to “escape from this prison cell.” That desire for escape is something he returns to once more on “Fly High”, though this time it’s from a hopeful perspective, as he speaks of a desire to break free of what’s holding him back from reaching his dreams.

The search for clarity and hope in a confusing world is explored on both “My Senses” and “Reason.” Through all of our frustrations, sometimes the best thing we can do is to let our emotions flow, and on “Dear Me” Slushii tells himself that “it’s okay to shed a tear” while confessing that he’s “coming undone.” When we’re frustrated, permission to let it all out can be just what we needed, allowing us to move forward. There’s something primal about electronic music that also makes it deeply human.

Out of Light speaks to emotions and experiences that many of us go through, and proves Slushii’s ability to reach listeners new to electronic music and those that didn’t even know they were looking for him.

Chrysalis: A Metamorphosis

Los Angeles-based producer and genre-bending visionary Slushii returns with Chrysalis-an expansive 18-track journey that marks a pivotal moment in his artistic evolution. It’s his most immersive project to date, with Chrysalis serving as both a musical statement and a conceptual cornerstone for the newly launched Sapient Dream webcomic on WEBTOON.

Anchored by standout tracks like “Feels Like Heaven,” “I Hope You Know,” and “Needed Your Heart,” the album explores themes of love, loss, and self-realization. Paired with collaborators CloudNone, SPIRIT LINK, and TIFFVNYJOY, Slushii stretches his sonic palette across electronica, ambient pop, and cinematic instrumentals.

“Chrysalis,” by name and nature, signals metamorphosis. It’s raw, yet refined. Dreamy, yet grounded.

Sapient Dream: A Visual Extension

The album’s visual extension, Sapient Dream, released in tandem with the LP, follows Kuro, a seemingly average teen thrown into an intergalactic war after a chance encounter with a mysterious sludge creature. With each episode of the webcomic soundtracked by tracks from the album, the project paints a vivid, synth-washed universe where music and narrative drive each other forward.

The Unexpected Weight Loss Journey

Beyond his musical endeavors, Slushii's journey took an unexpected turn towards health and fitness. Many fans have noticed the artist's significant weight loss transformation. While Slushii hasn't explicitly detailed his weight loss methods, his journey resonates with many who have struggled with their own health and fitness goals.

The author of this article shared his experience of weight loss. Before the pandemic, the author was huge into workout classes. He spent 2 years spending $280/month at SoulCycle, then transitioned to spending $280/month at Barry’s Bootcamp, then $230/month at F45, and finally $130 with the deal of the century at Corepower.

And that’s not factoring in the time aspect of me getting to and from these classes. F45 was at least a 5-minute walk from my old place, but I would drive 20 minutes each way to SoulCycle sometimes.

The author is now 15 lbs lighter than he was when he was spending all that money and time on classes.
