From May 15th to July 28th, Sarah embarked on a challenging thru-hiking journey. Early on she was feeling great and cruising, but Norovirus got her in Southern Virginia. She did a 4.4 mile day out of Pearisburg, intermittently collapsing along the way to a stealth camp at Clendinin and Pocahontas Rd. She waited out the sickness that day and night. The next day her fever broke, she rehydrated, and remarkably was able to do a little over 30 miles! However, the norovirus took some of her precious fat reserves and she would be in a deficit the rest of the hike. She just wouldn’t give up on herself though. She allowed God to take control and he walked with her all the way to Katahdin. She carried all her gear, food, and water. She walked extra miles to resupply boxes that she had sent prior to the start of her journey. The hardest thing was how long she went between showers, the bugs, and the record breaking heat wave she encountered in PA. She really slowed down after the White Mountains because she had no fat left. Her food could not sustain her. She would get weak and dizzy on climbs but she settled into a very slow hike that didn’t burn many calories and was able to keep going. She had to beg for food in the 100 mile wilderness because she had almost eaten everything she sent herself. She was actually Starving. Thankfully some very nice section hikers had extra food they were tired of carrying and that Gorp got her out of the 100 mile wilderness and up Katahdin. She’s so GRATEFUL!
