The quest for weight loss can be a challenging journey, both physically and emotionally. This article delves into the weight loss experiences of individuals, including Jackie Paige, a former FOX 2 News Morning personality, and explores the broader landscape of weight management, including the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) and the impact of diet on mental well-being.
Jackie Paige's Personal Journey
Jackie Paige, a beloved figure on FOX 2 News Morning, bravely shares her personal struggles with weight. At 50, she has found peace with her body, but the path to self-acceptance was fraught with challenges.
Facing Public Scrutiny
As a public figure, Jackie faced constant criticism and judgment. "I was conscious any time we went out to a restaurant to eat, and I knew that people may have recognized me and were seeing, watching what I was eating," she recalls. The harsh comments were particularly hurtful: "I'm surprised that you struggle with your weight… You must eat so much food. You're such a pig."
The Toll on Mental Health
The relentless pressure and failed diets took a severe toll on Jackie's mental health. "It got pretty bad. I didn't know if life was worth living," she admits. The fear of losing her job and the overwhelming sense of despair led her to leave FOX 2. "I left FOX 2 because of it. It was really bad. I have to admit; I was very depressed. I wanted to crawl into a hole and sometimes I actually thought about ending my life."
A Turning Point
An embarrassing incident on a plane, where she couldn't buckle her seatbelt, became a turning point. "I got on the plane and I sat down and I couldn't buckle my seatbelt. It was too small, and I had to have an extender," she recounts. "I was so embarrassed… and I said, 'That's it. I'm done.'"

Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Jackie opted for gastric sleeve surgery in March 2017, a procedure that removed 80% of her stomach. "Your stomach looks kind of like a balloon, and they cut the biggest part of the balloon off and they take it out. It's permanent," she explains.
Life After Surgery
A year and a half after the surgery, Jackie is transformed, both mentally and physically. Her husband, David, witnessed her struggles and admired her resilience. "There were days that were very dark, really hard to kind of get up, get going, face the public. Face yourself," he says. "(Watching that as her husband was) very difficult, very difficult. But it didn't change the connection she and I had. If anything it made it stronger."
Jackie embraced a new lifestyle, incorporating regular workouts and mindful eating. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done," she acknowledges. She has lost over 110 pounds and focuses on being "healthy" and "happy" rather than fixating on being "skinny" or "thin."
She wants to talk openly about it to others who may also be struggling with weight loss.
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs): A New Frontier in Weight Loss
The emergence of GLP-1 RAs, such as semaglutide, has revolutionized weight management, offering an effective, non-invasive treatment option for individuals with and without diabetes. These medications have garnered significant attention on social media, leading to increased demand and, consequently, shortages.

The Promise and the Peril
GLP-1 RAs have shown remarkable efficacy in promoting weight loss, rivaling that of bariatric surgery in some cases. However, concerns have been raised regarding their potential impact on mental health. Recent reports have linked GLP-1 RAs like liraglutide and semaglutide to an increased risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-injury.
Social Media's Perspective
A study aimed to assess the perceived impact of GLP-1 RAs on mental health by analyzing discussions on popular online platforms. The study identified a range of mental health issues associated with GLP-1 RA use, including sleep disturbances (insomnia), anxiety, depression, and general mental health concerns.
Mental Health and Weight Loss
The study revealed a complex relationship between weight loss, GLP-1 RAs, and mental health. While some individuals experienced improved mood and reduced anxiety/insomnia after initiating GLP-1 RAs, others reported a deterioration in mood and increased anxiety/insomnia. The medications also appeared to influence addictive behaviors.
Challenges and Considerations
The challenges of accessing GLP-1 RAs and the potential side effects were recurring themes in online discussions. Establishing a clear cause-and-effect relationship between metabolic diseases, depression, and medications is difficult due to their complex interplay and individual differences.
Social Media Data Gathering
Data gathering activities were carried out on 28 May 2023, and further updated on 13 June 2023, with the help of specialized web application (e.g., Exportcomments). The web application retrospectively collected all entries made since the inception of the different subreddits examined here, which were created over a timeframe spanning from December 2019 to November 2022. Most social media users’ comments, however, were actually made during the Spring of 2023.
