For those following a ketogenic lifestyle, the desire for a sweet, creamy treat doesn't have to be a forbidden indulgence. Keto ice cream offers a fantastic way to enjoy a classic dessert while staying true to your dietary goals. The real fun begins with the toppings, allowing for endless customization and flavor combinations. This guide explores a variety of keto-friendly ice cream toppings, from homemade sauces to fresh fruit and crunchy nuts, providing everything you need to create the perfect low-carb sundae.
Keto-Friendly Ice Cream Options
The foundation of any great sundae is, of course, the ice cream itself. While traditional store-bought ice cream is typically off-limits due to its high sugar content, there are several excellent keto ice cream options available:
- Homemade Keto Ice Cream: Making your own keto ice cream is surprisingly easy and allows for complete control over ingredients. Numerous recipes utilize staples you likely already have on hand, such as heavy cream, sweeteners like erythritol or allulose, and flavorings like vanilla extract or cocoa powder.
- Keto Ice Cream Brands: Several brands specialize in low-carb ice cream, using alternative sweeteners and high-fat bases to create a creamy and satisfying treat. Rebel Creamery is a popular choice, known for its rich, fatty base of cream.
- Dairy-Free Keto Ice Cream: For those with dairy sensitivities, there are also dairy-free keto ice cream options available. These often use coconut milk or avocados as a base, offering a creamy texture without the dairy.
Luscious Keto Sauces: The Sweetest Drizzle
Sauces are a quintessential ice cream topping, adding moisture, flavor, and visual appeal. Fortunately, there are many ways to create delicious keto-friendly sauces at home:
Keto Hot Fudge Sauce
This luscious Keto Chocolate Sauce is smooth and creamy and full of rich, fudgy flavor. Drizzle it over your favorite keto ice cream for an amazing dessert experience! A big bowl of keto ice cream topped with ribbons of this luscious keto hot fudge sauce. This keto chocolate sauce is so darn good, you can drizzle it over keto brownies, spread it on some keto chocolate chip cookies, or spoon it over keto cheesecake. Or you could just eat it with a spoon! This sauce is just as thick and velvety and chocolatey as it ever was. It pours over that ice cream, melting it just slightly as it goes, and becoming more fudgy as it cools against the frosty dessert. But I also made it a little bit lighter in calories, and it stays gooier and softer. And it’s easier to reheat. And the best part is that you can adapt it for interesting flavors. Consider mint extract instead of vanilla. Or orange extract! Or coffee, or raspberry, or caramel.
Ingredients:
- Heavy whipping cream: This is the creamy base of the hot fudge sauce.
- Water: I used a little water to help thin the sauce and reduce the calories and fat a bit.
- Allulose sweetener: The sweetener you use determines the final consistency of the sauce. You can use erythritol, but it will solidify and recrystallize as it cools. Allulose makes it more fudgy, and it stays creamy (although it still firms up).
- Unsweetened chocolate: Make sure to choose chocolate that is 100% cacao, with no sweeteners at all.
Instructions:
- Add the wet ingredients: Combine the cream and water together a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Simmer the mixture: Bring to a simmer, whisking until the sweetener dissolves. Cook 5 minutes, whisking frequently.
- Add the chocolate: Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate and let sit 3 minutes, to melt.
- Use as desired: Drizzle over your favorite low carb ice cream or use as chocolate fondue.
- To rewarm: Place the desired amount of sauce in a bowl and microwave on 50% power in 20 second increments. You can also add the sauce to a heat-safe bowl over a pan of gently simmering water, stirring frequently.
Tips:
- Allulose keeps this keto chocolate sauce softer and it won’t recrystallize.
- I prefer unsweetened chocolate for recipes like this, so I can control the sweetness and the consistency.
- I often add espresso powder to chocolate recipes to deepen and enhance the chocolate flavor.
- If you find your sauce not thickening up as it cools, whisk in a little cocoa powder (1 to 2 teaspoons).
Storage:
Store this sugar-free chocolate sauce in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to a week. It It will firm up and become more like soft fudge in the fridge. To use, gently warm until melty.

Keto Peanut Butter Sauce
This gluten free low carb peanut butter sauce is sweet and rich and goes perfectly on ice cream, cakes, or other keto desserts. We also love it drizzled on pancakes. I originally made this keto peanut butter ice cream sauce as a sauce for an ICE CREAM CHEESECAKE, but it’s so delicious and versatile, I find myself using it everywhere else, too!
Instructions:
- Melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the remaining ingredients.
- Whisk until all ingredients are dissolved.
- Bring sauce to a gentle simmer while whisking.
Tips:
- If you find that your sauce is becoming lumpy or is too thick for your taste, there’s an easy fix. Just add more water as you warm and whisk! It will smooth out very nicely.
- This ice cream topping is almost impossible to mess up!
Other Keto Sauce Ideas
- Caramel Sauce: A rich caramel sauce can be made using butter, heavy cream, and a keto-friendly sweetener like allulose.
- Berry Sauce: Simmer fresh or frozen berries with a touch of sweetener and lemon juice for a vibrant and fruity sauce.
- Sugar-Free Chocolate Syrup: For a thinner syrup, similar to Hershey’s, combine water, cocoa powder, and a keto-friendly sweetener.
Fresh and Fruity Delights
Fruits can add a burst of freshness, color, and essential nutrients to your keto ice cream sundae. While some fruits are higher in carbs than others, there are several excellent low-carb options:
- Berries: Raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries are all relatively low in carbs and packed with antioxidants.
- Avocado: While not traditionally considered a sweet topping, avocado can add a creamy and unexpected twist to your sundae.
- Lemon or Lime Zest: A sprinkle of citrus zest can brighten up the flavor of your ice cream and add a touch of zing.
Crunchy and Nutty Goodness
Nuts provide a satisfying crunch and a dose of healthy fats, making them a perfect addition to your keto ice cream sundae:
- Pecans: Toasted pecans offer a warm, buttery flavor that pairs well with many ice cream flavors.
- Almonds: Sliced or slivered almonds add a delicate crunch and a subtle nutty flavor.
- Walnuts: Chopped walnuts provide a slightly bitter and earthy flavor that complements chocolate and caramel sauces.
- Macadamia Nuts: These buttery and rich nuts are a decadent addition to any keto sundae.
Other Keto-Friendly Toppings
- Keto Whipped Cream: The most popular topping for extra creaminess.
- Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips: ChocZero has a large selection of sugar-free chocolate chips and chocolate bark.
- Dark Chocolate: If you like very dark chocolate, Lindt 90% cocoa supreme chocolate bars are also keto-friendly.
- Espresso Powder: I often add espresso powder to chocolate recipes to deepen and enhance the chocolate flavor.
Building Your Keto Ice Cream Sundae
- Choose your base: Select your favorite keto ice cream flavor.
- Add sauces or syrups: Drizzle generously with your keto-friendly sauce of choice.
- Incorporate toppings: Sprinkle with nuts, berries, chocolate chips, or any other desired toppings.

Important Considerations
- Nutritional Information: Always check the nutritional information of all ingredients to ensure they fit within your daily macro goals.
- Sweeteners: Be mindful of the type and amount of sweetener used in your toppings, as some sweeteners can affect blood sugar levels differently.
- Portion Control: While keto ice cream and toppings can be a guilt-free indulgence, it's still important to practice portion control to maintain a healthy diet.
