- SkinnyFats: SkinnyFats has a "healthy side" option on their menu and is known for accommodating swap requests. They offer keto food options, like the Hot Chix salad, a buffalo chicken salad with avocado, blue cheese, jalapeño ranch, etc., and they’ll also make almost any swap request without extra charge. Chris ordered the Thai Cobb Salad but asked them to swap the mango for avocado. They’ll also swap buns for lettuce. They have zucchini noodle bowls, Buffalo-style cauliflower, even chia pudding. - Ocean One Bar & Grill: Located in Planet Hollywood, Ocean One Bar & Grill offers a budget-friendly lunch option with all lunch dishes and appetizers priced at $4.99. You can order dishes like tuna tartare, bunless mahi-mahi sandwiches with coleslaw, and Greek chicken salad.
Navigating Buffets on Keto
Las Vegas is famous for its all-you-can-eat buffets, which can be surprisingly keto-friendly if approached strategically. Focus on high-fat, low-carb options like roast meats (brisket, ham, turkey, ribs), chicken wings, and salad bars with keto-friendly dressings. Some buffets also offer sugar-free desserts.
- Garden Court Buffet: This buffet offers a variety of cuisines, including American, Asian, Mexican, and Hawaiian. Their sugar-free desserts are all baked goods.
- AYCE at the Palms: This buffet is arranged by cooking type, with stations like The Hearth, Smoke & Fire, Revival, Roastery, Greenery, World Pan, and Light & Sweet. Keto-friendly options include zucchini noodles, baba ghanoush, kimchi, tacos, French onion soup, green bean casserole, collard greens with bacon, brussel sprouts, and clam boil. They also have a sugar-free gelato ice cream bar.
Making Keto Choices at Other Restaurants
Even if a restaurant doesn't explicitly advertise keto options, it's often possible to create a keto-friendly meal by making smart choices and modifications.
- Breakfast: Opt for omelets with cheese, bacon, avocado, and vegetables. Avoid toast, pastries, and sugary fruits. At Hash A Go Go a salmon omelet with tomatoes & spinach (didn’t touch much of the berries though since they were mostly unfrozen packaged ones … blehh, but I did have the 2 apple & orange slices). At EggSlut order some pure cheddar cheese, a warm egg with steamy bacon, and arugula with shaved parmesan, without the bun.
- Lunch and Dinner: Choose salads with grilled chicken, steak, or fish. Ask for extra cheese, avocado, or nuts for added fat. At Flour & Barley order a Fall Harvest salad - mixed greens, bacon, Gala apple slices, tomatoes, blue cheese, (cranberries which I asked to be taken out), pecans, apple cider vinegar and some grilled chicken which I added as an extra. At Chipotle, order a burrito bowl, and to replace the rice base I simply asked for them to put Romaine lettuce instead (and no beans). Layered on top is some steak, Monterey Jack cheese, a spoon of tomato salsa, and a heaping pile of GUAC. At Ceasar’s Palace order an Asian salad that consisted of - Napa cabbage, mixed greens, radicchio, pulled chicken, peppers, edamame, snow peas, sprouts, and a bit of shredded carrots.
- Sushi: Opt for sashimi (slices of raw fish) or sushi rolls without rice. Choose fillings like avocado, cucumber, and cream cheese. At Sushi Roku at Caesar’s Palace order seared salmon with avocado, Tuna Tartare & guac with Beef Rib Eye wrapped Asparagus, spicy scallop rolls (cut 8 pieces total for our group).
- Italian: Order dishes with creamy sauces or olive oil-based dressings. Avoid pasta and bread. For the Secondi, the main course, I had the Short Rib “al Barolo” which had a small base of cornmeal Polenta (definitely high in carbs but an idea for a Keto friendly Polenta can simply be to use Almond Meal instead of Cornmeal).
Keto-Friendly Snacks and Drinks
Having keto-friendly snacks on hand can help you stay on track between meals and avoid impulsive, carb-laden choices.
- Snacks: Questbars, sugar-free raspberry mousse cakes, pork cracklings, avocado salsa.
- Drinks: Unsweetened coffee with coconut milk, KeVita Kombucha. At the Coca-Cola store, we found an orange-vanilla Coke Zero that made for a nice, cold treat while out on a walk. They also had a blueberry-lavender Vitamin Water the was pretty nice too.
Indulgences and Balance
While it's important to stay focused on your keto goals, it's also okay to indulge in moderation. Vacations are a time to relax and enjoy yourself, and a few small treats won't necessarily derail your progress.
- Allowing for exceptions: It's okay to make a couple of exceptions and feel it was better to stay keto for most of the trip and simply make a few allowances so you don’t feel like you missed out on something special.
- Maintaining balance: Vacations, for me, are short periods during which I can indulge a little more.
Tips for Staying Keto in Vegas
- Plan ahead: Research restaurants and menus in advance.
- Pack snacks: Bring your own keto-friendly snacks to avoid temptation.
- Be prepared to modify: Don't be afraid to ask for substitutions or modifications to make a dish keto-friendly.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to ketosis.
- Don't beat yourself up: If you slip up, don't let it derail your entire trip. Just get back on track at your next meal.
