A well-maintained hot tub cover is an essential component of your spa experience, quietly ensuring heat retention and preventing unwanted debris from contaminating the water. This guide provides comprehensive information on Hot Spot spa covers, including their features, maintenance, replacement, and how to choose the right cover for your needs.
Why a Quality Hot Tub Cover Matters
A well-made cover is an essential part of your hot tub. It quietly fulfills two simple yet important functions: It keeps in heat, and it keeps out anything that shouldn't be in your water. A critical component of Hot Spring Spas’ Energy Smart® system, these custom-fitted covers are essential to achieving the leading energy efficiency that sets our hot tubs apart. Replacing your hot tub cover can save up to $180 per year on your electricity bill!
Hot Spring Spa WeatherPro Covers: An Overview

Hot Spring Spas leads the industry in producing highly energy-efficient hot tubs and hot tub covers. They feature a dense foam core and a thick insulated gasket that runs the entire length of the hinge to help prevent heat from escaping between the cover halves.
Durability and Weather Resistance
WeatherPro covers feature durable, fade-resistant materials that provide superior resistance to the elements. Each cover is made with double-stitched polyester for long-lasting performance that is less prone to fading and more water and abrasion resistant.

The DuraTherm Cover Experience
Initially I am quite pleased with my new DuraTherm cover and also the WeatherShield fabric it is made of. My covers have all been made of the traditional vinyl up until now, so this is quite a change. I really like the look of the fabric over the vinyl as it gives the spa a much more upscale look. The cover appears to be well-constructed with good quality materials. The sewing is done in a professional and neat manner.
Addressing Potential Drawbacks
The thing I would like to see changed would be for the skirt to be somehow made to be more weighted and heavy-duty. The skirt is basically decorative in my opinion and just blows open at the slits in the big winds we get here. On my last vinyl cover, I had the option of ordering a continuous skirt over one with slits, and I felt this gave the cover a higher degree of insulation around the edge as it fit the spa well and kept the wind from affecting the spa shell-to-cover junction. Also, my new DuraTherm cover came with four labels sewn into the seam on one end of the cover. (See photos) The labels are all white, while the cover is coffee brown. I personally do not like this look at all and feel it cheapens the overall look of the cover quite a bit. I don't believe any of the other covers I've owned have had even one label displayed in such a manner on the cover. Worst of all, the label that is under the "Risk of Drowning" label is a paper sticker adhered to a non-stick paper base. It says on it: "Warranty Voided if Removed." As you can see in the photo, it is already starting to curl and deteriorate, so not sure how this will look in a year or two. The one label that can void the warranty if destroyed is made of paper! My point is that this flurry of white labels on my beautiful new coffee cover is very detracting. If a label is truly necessary, like perhaps the drowning risk label, why not have it sewn on the inside of the skirt or somewhere else out of view. It's too soon to say how I will like this cover over time. If there are any negatives to add, I will update my review in the future. I am hoping that my over $800 investment will turn out to have been a wise one.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity
Hot tub covers are designed to be durable and require relatively little maintenance. With a bit of care and consideration, a well-made hot tub cover can remain in peak condition for several years. Covers require regular maintenance and should be inspected yearly for wear and to ensure a tight seal.
Gentle Handling
Handle your cover gently: Your hot tub's cover is made with an outer layer of polyester which is coated underneath to make it water-resistant. The polyester surrounds a reinforced foam core, which is wrapped in plastic or laminate to form a vapor barrier. If the cover is ripped, punctured, or otherwise damaged, water may permeate the vapor barrier and saturate the interior foam, which will limit your cover's ability to do its job.
Regular Cleaning
Keep your cover clear:Your cover helps insulate your hot tub by creating a tight seal: Warm air can't escape, and cooler air can't enter.

Avoiding Misuse
Your hot tub cover is not a piece of furniture:For safety reasons, never let children or pets climb on top of a covered hot tub. Even if your cover is resting on solid ground, though, it's not a good idea to let anyone stand or sit on it; in a similar vein, avoid the temptation to use your covered tub as a makeshift table.
Chemical Considerations
After adding chemicals to your water, leave your hot tub uncovered for half an hour to give them time to purify and freshen the water:Some chemicals commonly used in water care systems, including chlorine, need to interact with air in order to work properly. Covering up your hot tub immediately after treating your water can trap chemical vapors against the cover, which can damage it. Similarly, always monitor the pH balance of your water.
When to Replace Your Hot Tub Cover
Nothing lasts forever, though, and eventually your cover will likely need to be replaced. Since hot tub covers are exposed to the elements, they will eventually need replacement. You can contact your local Hot Spring dealer to inquire about replacing your cover when it is time. How can you tell when it is time to replace your hot tub cover? Even if you take meticulous care of your hot tub cover, at some point it'll probably need to be replaced. Take a close look at it: Does it lie flat over your spa, or does it sag in the center? Is the cover material torn, punctured, or cracked? Has your cover grown noticeably heavier over time? That's water weight: A heavier cover means spa water has permeated the vapor barrier protecting the foam core. Does your cover smell like must or mold? Mold and bacteria thrive in warm, damp environments, and while your hot tub's water care system will eradicate any contaminants inside your spa, your cover could be vulnerable. A bad smell might indicate that mold is growing inside your cover's foam core. The number one cause of spa cover failure is water absorption. Once a hot tub cover starts absorbing water (moisture) it will act like a sponge and in a very short time can double in weight.
The Importance of a Proper Fit
Fit is the key consideration. If your hot tub cover doesn't fit over the top of your hot tub snugly enough to create a tight seal, it doesn't matter how well-made that cover might be-heat will escape, and your hot tub cover won't be able to do its job. In heavy winds, your hot tub cover could be blown away.
Measuring for the Perfect Fit
When it comes to purchasing a replacement hot tub cover, taking proper measurements is the key to receiving the perfect product.

Choosing the Right Cover: Avoiding Compromises
If you're looking to save money, you may be tempted to order an inexpensive hot tub cover from an online retailer. More importantly, though, you might end up compromising on two vital considerations in the pursuit of a deal: fit and quality. When you order online-particularly when you order from a site that doesn't specialize in hot tubs-you run the risk of ending up with a poorly-made, ill-fitting cover that will do little to insulate or protect your spa.

Hot Spot Spa Covers: Key Features and Options
Built for harsh winters, our spa covers ensure a perfect fit for any brand or model. Our commitment to quality is backed by an industry-leading 10-year warranty, offering you unmatched peace of mind. Our hard foam hot tub covers are custom-built with meticulous care to ensure exceptional strength, superior insulation, and lasting performance. We pride ourselves on efficiency, with most custom-fit covers built and shipped as quickly as 2 weeks. The Hot Spring Hot Spot SE/SLX Spa Cover is made to order with exact manufacturer dimensions to ensure a perfect fit.
Foam Density and Thickness
- Foam Thickness: We offer three foam densities. 4” to 2” taper, 5” to 3” taper and a 6” to 4” taper. The thicker the cover the more insulation it offers the spa.
- Foam Density: The higher the foam weight the denser the foam which will give greater strength. 1 lb foam will hold 40-45 lbs of weight, 1.5 lb foam will hold 70-80 lbs of weight and the 2 lb foam will hold over 100 lbs. The thicker (taper) the cover the greater the weight bearing as well. Example: 6″ to 4″ taper with 2 lb foam will hold 250 lbs+.
You recommend 1.5 lb and 2 lb foam. We do recommend ordering your cover with either 1.5 lb foam or 2 lb foam for extra strength. If your cover is under an awning or a gazebo then the 1 lb foam will be sufficient. Covers built with 1 lb foam tend not to be strong enough to sufficiently withstand the outdoor elements for the long term. For example here is a 4″ to 2″ tapered cover with the 1 lb foam after the winter thaw (picture shown is not one of our covers). You recommend 1.5 lb and 2 lb foam.
Vapor Barrier Protection
The vapor barrier is the plastic barrier that protects the foam from getting heavy over time due to water absorption. We build our covers with thickest poly barrier that gives the absolute best protection against water absorption. We use an exclusive, state-of-the-art heat sealing process to further protect your foam. For the best protection we recommend upgrading to the Dual Extreme Vapor Barrier. This is an 8mil thick barrier that is heat sealed for the absolute best protection available.
Additional Features for Enhanced Performance
- Energy Shield: The energy shield is an additional layer of insulation that helps keep the heat inside the hot tub, reducing the load on your heating system. The energy shield upgrade offers an extra layer in efficiency.
- Reinforced Handles: Our premium hot tub covers are built with super strong reinforced vinyl handles that match your hot tub cover to ensure a great looking and functional spa cover.
- Steam Stoppers: All covers come standard with two steam stoppers located at either end of the fold to help prevent any heat or steam from escaping from the fold when the cover is closed. The full length steam stopper upgrade runs the full length of the fold for a better seal and greater insulation (R-Value).
- Mesh Underliner: Spa Covers are more vulnerable form the inside than from the outside. The underliner is a key component of your cover. Our covers are built with a chlorine and bromine resistant breathable mesh underliner. Some manufacturers use a solid liner, which can collect condensation in the interior of the cover which can cause eventual vapor barrier breakdown and mildew buildup. With a mesh underliner, the condensation easily drips back into your spa to avoid bacteria or mold growth or long term direct exposure to the vapor barrier.
- Cover Cap: We are the only manufacturer to offer a premium CUSTOM built spa cover cap. We build it with an extremely thick polyester sealed fabric for a water and weatherproof cover to help protect and extend the life of your new cover. We custom build each cover for a form fitting fit over your spa cover to ensure it looks as good as it works. Protect your investment and let the cover cap take the abuse.
Hot Tub Cover Lifters: Enhancing Convenience and Cover Longevity
A hot tub cover lifter extends the life of your hot tub cover. Without a lifter, removing, storing, and replacing the cover between uses can become a chore, and your cover can become scuffed or damaged when placed on the ground, patio, or deck. With a spa cover lifter, one person can open and close the cover effortlessly, and keep it safely off the ground. Our cover lifters make it easier than ever to access and enjoy your spa! For the easiest cover removal you may consider ordering a cover lift to assist you in with the “on and off” process. A cover lift is the absolute best purchase any hot tub owner could ever make. It makes using your spa SO much easier and will certainly get you in your spa that much more. We have a great sale on our cover lifters. Why not add one with your new premium spa cover.
