Why Shredded Chicken?
Shredded chicken is a must for easy family dinners, and with good reason. It's simple to make, incredibly versatile, and a healthy source of lean protein. Preparing a big batch of shredded chicken at the beginning of the week can simplify meal planning and ensure you always have a healthy protein option on hand.
How to Make Shredded Chicken: Multiple Methods
There are several ways to cook and shred chicken, each with its own advantages. Here's a breakdown of the most popular methods:
Slow Cooker Method
This is a hands-off method that results in juicy, tender chicken.
- Place boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs in the slow cooker.
- Season with your favorite herbs and spices. Italian seasoning, herbs de Provence, chicken seasoning, cajun seasoning, or taco seasoning are all great options. You can also add cayenne pepper or red chili flakes for some heat. A simple blend of kosher salt, onion powder, ground paprika, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper works well.
- Add about 1/2 cup of low-sodium chicken broth to the slow cooker.
- Cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-4 hours, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Shred the chicken with two forks directly in the slow cooker.
Instant Pot Method
This is the quickest method for making shredded chicken.

- Place chicken breasts in the Instant Pot.
- Add 1 cup of broth or water and any desired seasonings.
- Seal the lid and cook for 15 minutes on high pressure.
- Quick release the pressure.
- Remove the chicken and shred with two forks or by hand.
Stovetop Method
This method involves poaching the chicken in broth or water
- Place chicken in a large pot and cover with chicken broth and/or water, ensuring the chicken is fully submerged.
- Season generously with salt.
- Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature of 160-165 degrees F).
- Remove the chicken from the broth (but don't discard the broth!).
- Transfer to a bowl and shred with two forks.
- Add 1/4 cup of the remaining broth to the chicken to keep it moist.
Oven Method
This method involves baking the chicken in a baking dish.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place chicken in a baking dish and add any seasonings you'd like.
- Add a little bit of water to the bottom of the pan and cover with foil or an oven-safe lid. This makes sure your chicken doesn’t come out super dry!
- Bake for 25-35 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.
- Once the chicken is cooked let it cool down a bit and then it’s time to shred it.
Shredding Techniques
- Two Forks: This is a classic method. Simply use two forks to pull the chicken apart.
- Stand Mixer: This is a quick and easy method, especially for large batches. Place the cooked chicken in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Turn the mixer on low speed and let it do the work.
- Hand Mixer: A hand mixer can also be used to shred chicken, though it may not be as efficient as a stand mixer.
- By Hand: Once the chicken is cooled, you can use your hands to shred it.
Tips for Juicy Shredded Chicken
- Don't Overcook: Overcooked chicken will be dry and difficult to shred. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Let it Rest: Allow the cooked chicken to rest for 10 minutes before shredding. This helps the juices redistribute, resulting in more tender and flavorful chicken.
- Add Broth: After shredding, add a bit of the cooking broth to the chicken to keep it moist.
Freezing Shredded Chicken
Shredded chicken freezes well, making it a convenient option for meal prepping.
- Allow the cooked chicken to cool completely.
- Place the shredded chicken in a freezer-safe bag or container.
- Remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
- Freeze for up to 3 months.
