Food Lion, an omnichannel grocery retailer with a strong presence in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, has a longstanding commitment to nourishing its neighbors and addressing food insecurity in the communities it serves. Through various initiatives and partnerships, Food Lion strives to ensure that everyone has access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food.
Addressing Increased Demand on Food Banks
Recognizing the increased demand on local food banks and the growing financial pressures on many households, Food Lion is expanding its efforts to help families stretch their budgets and access quality food. In October 2025, Food Lion reaffirmed its commitment by announcing a $1 million donation from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to support local food banks. This donation aims to help food banks respond to the increased needs within their communities.
Greg Finchum, President of Food Lion, emphasized the company's deep responsibility to help reduce hunger and support neighbors in need. He stated that being a good neighbor means ensuring everyone has access to fresh, affordable food and the support they need to thrive.
Food Bank Fund Activation
To further support local food banks, Food Lion activated a Food Bank Fund through the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation from November 1st to November 4th. Customers were invited to donate at the register in any Food Lion store, with all funds raised directly supporting local food banks and their efforts to address community needs. Since its inception in 2001, the Foundation has distributed nearly $23 million across Food Lion’s 10-state operating area.
Holidays Without Hunger Campaign
During the holiday season, Food Lion Feeds invites customers to participate in the Holidays Without Hunger campaign. From November 5th to December 9th, customers can purchase and donate a $6 Food Lion Feeds holiday food box, which each store will donate directly to local Feeding America® partner food banks or feeding agencies in its community. Since 2014, this campaign has helped provide more than 73 million meals through Feeding America and its partners. Customers can also round up their purchases or donate at checkout, with 100% of contributions supporting local feeding agencies.

SuperSNAP: Addressing the Cost of Healthy Food
SuperSNAP is a program designed to address the cost of healthy food and improve health outcomes for SNAP recipients with limited money to spend on food. The program offers incentive funds for SNAP recipients to consume more fruits and vegetables by providing a dollar-for-dollar match for every SNAP-eligible food purchase at Food Lion, up to $40 per month. The incentive dollars earned can only be used to purchase qualifying fruits and vegetables from Food Lion.
Unhealthy diets lacking fruits and vegetables are linked to poorer health outcomes. SuperSNAP aims to increase access to healthy food by making it more affordable, leading to better health for participants. Eight local federally qualified health centers and public health departments refer participants to SuperSNAP and provide wraparound services to clients with nutritional needs.
Participants who buy SNAP-eligible food at a participating Food Lion receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to $40 per month in incentives on their loyalty card. The incentives can be used at a future time to purchase approved fruits and vegetables by using the Food Lion loyalty card at the point of sale. Food Lion provides monthly reports and receives reimbursement for incentives redeemed.
Eat Well Program: Produce Prescriptions
The Eat Well program in North Carolina, managed by Reinvestment Partners, is a produce prescription program that provides participants with $40 each month to purchase WIC-approved fruits and vegetables from any Food Lion store in the state. Healthcare partners enroll their patients into the Eat Well program, with eligibility requirements varying but generally including low-income status and risk factors for diet-related diseases. Eat Well partners with academic researchers to evaluate changes in health and healthcare outcomes.

Research on Healthy Helping Program
Researchers from UNC-Chapel Hill interviewed participants in the Healthy Helping Fruit and Vegetable Program, which provided beneficiaries $40 per month to purchase fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables at a chain supermarket retailer. Participants appreciated the benefit and enjoyed being able to choose which foods to buy. The research team also surveyed a larger group of 200 participants to examine overall dietary quality.
The study found that the diet quality of lower-income households with food insecurity was similar to that of higher-income households after enrolling in the Healthy Helping program, suggesting some improvement in dietary habits. The researchers noted that Healthy Helping offers flexibility for families to make their own decisions about what and how much healthy food to purchase.
