Verona, a stunning city in Italy, offers a delightful culinary landscape. Beyond traditional Italian fare, Verona boasts a growing number of restaurants catering to health-conscious diners. This article explores some of the best options for those seeking healthy and delicious meals in Verona and nearby areas.
Flora: A Vegan and Gluten-Free Gem
During a five-day stay in Verona in May, I discovered a true gem for healthy eating: Flora. This low-key restaurant offers a completely vegan, gluten-free menu, free from added sugar. The dishes were so delicious that I visited twice during my mini-break.
My first dinner course was the CAPPUCINO FLORA, an asparagus soup featuring green and white asparagus, shallots, pepper, and poppy seeds. The next course was WILD RED RICE WITH ASPARAGUS AND APPLES, spiced with coriander, mustard, lemon, nutmeg, and black pepper. The third course consisted of TOFU GLAZED WITH SESAME AND CHICKPEAS, with a glaze made from tamari, a bit of Sriacha sauce, ginger, and garlic.
For dessert, I chose the MANGO DREAM, a heavenly cheesecake with a raw bottom and a layer of light and silky mango mousse made from cashews. Although it contained a tiny bit of honey, it was a delightful treat.
Flora is highly recommended for its mouth-watering and healthy food, cosy surroundings, and nice atmosphere. The service was fine, the waiter knowledgable, and the prices quite low. The other guests were Italian and seemed to be returning customers. The waiter mentioned that Flora has been owned by the same family for decades and has always fought against food waste. During a lunch buffet, customers paid by weight, encouraging mindful eating.
