The Cheesecake Factory is a popular dining destination known for its extensive, family-friendly menu, upscale casual atmosphere, and, of course, its decadent cheesecakes. However, with its large portions and indulgent dishes, navigating the menu for a healthy meal can be challenging. Fortunately, with careful consideration and smart choices, it's possible to enjoy a satisfying and nutritious meal at The Cheesecake Factory without completely derailing your health goals.
Making Healthy Choices at The Cheesecake Factory
Eating healthy while dining out requires awareness and a strategic approach. At The Cheesecake Factory, where temptations abound, it's essential to be mindful of your choices. It is important to pay attention to related aspects of your diet. Sodium, for instance, and making sure you get enough protein are both worthwhile concerns. Sugar is another relevant concern for diabetics, specifically.
The Importance of Balance and Moderation
If you always deprive yourself from ordering certain foods, you're going to drive yourself crazy. The actual healthiest choice is the choice you want - when you allow yourself the food you crave all of the time, you're actually more likely to make balanced choices in the long run. You're wired to want what you can't have.
Utilizing Available Nutritional Information
Unfortunately, the only information the Cheesecake Factory makes publically available is their calorie counts. In fact, they print them directly on the menu for you to browse as you choose. They also separate the lower-calorie options to a separate menu: the "Skinnylicious" menu. Many of these menu items made it onto this list; however, the items that were so low-calorie and lacking in sustenance that they would not satiate you for a meal were omitted. Ordering something without enough protein, carbohydrates, and fats to subsist a meal isn't actually healthy at all!
Recommended Healthy Menu Options
Several dishes at The Cheesecake Factory offer a balance of flavor and nutrition. Here are some options to consider:

- SKINNYLICIOUS TUSCAN CHICKEN: This dish is full of flavor and an optimum choice for lean protein and fiber from the chicken and veggies. In this better-for-you take on Italian food, Cheesecake Factory serves up grilled chicken breast with tomatoes, artichokes, capers, fresh basil, and a balsamic vinaigrette placed elegantly over a bed of fresh vegetables and farro. Farro is a whole grain - kind of like quinoa or rice - and provides a filling supply of healthy carbohydrates. This entree "provides a generous amount of protein from the chicken, without being high in saturated fat," said Montemayor. "The vegetables and farro also add a variety of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
- SHEILA’S CHICKEN AND AVOCADO SALAD: The savory and sweet blend of flavors in this healthy, vitamin-packed salad is a prime choice for healthy eating. The difference? This salad might be on the Skinnylicious menu, but it's still loaded with delicious and satisfying foods.
- CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM LETTUCE WRAPS: Expect a nice, balanced calorie count with this dish. "I love the chicken lettuce wrap tacos at The Cheesecake Factory," said Allison Childress, Ph.D., RDN, CSSD, LD, a registered and licensed dietitian and assistant professor of nutritional services at Texas Tech University. "You can choose an Asian or Mexican version and they are accompanied by several delicious sauces. I like this particular dish because it is low calorie, fresh, and uses whole food ingredients.
- Asian Chicken Salad: The Asian Chicken Salad is a bed of romaine lettuce topped with carrots, grilled chicken for some lean protein, bean sprouts, green onions, cilantro, rice noodles, wontons, almonds, and sesame seeds. All those balanced ingredients are drizzled with a sesame-soy dressing to add more flavor.
- Factory Chopped Salad: Some salads leave you hungry and wanting more - but this one has enough nutritious toppings to supplement an actual meal. The Factory Chopped Salad is 500 calories and has chicken, tomato, avocado, corn, bacon, blue cheese, and apple.
- Grilled Fish Tacos: "I personally am a fan of fish tacos in general, and this entree comes with a variety of delicious toppings and sides such as avocados, rice, and beans. Although it is a bit high in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar, I know that this dish is something I will really enjoy. "I love tacos. And with vegetables on the side instead of rice, it's an excellent source of fiber with over 10g for the whole plate!
- SkinnyLicious Factory Chopped Salad: "If you're trying to choose a healthy option at the Cheesecake Factory, the SkinnyLicious Menu is full of fabulous choices," she told us. "My personal go-to is the SkinnyLicious Factory Chopped Salad. Not only is it delicious, but they give you a nice, large portion, and with the protein-packed chicken, fiber-rich veggies, and healthy fats from avocados, you definitely won't leave feeling hungry.
- Grilled turkey burger: "I would order the grilled turkey burger without any mayo or sauces. Always ask for those on the side so you can put those on yourself. I love a good burger and I usually try to opt for turkey because the meat is leaner. Also, I love mushrooms which it comes with as well as grilled onions, lettuce, and tomato. It also comes on a whole wheat bun which is great for added fiber. And because it's most likely a treat I would go with the fries." Lean turkey breast and smooth avocado come together for a satisfying, nutritious sandwich. Turkey burgers are a great option for people who are trying to avoid red meat. This one will definitely satisfy, as it's topped with mayo, garlic, and spices, along with heaps of grilled onions, lettuce, and tomato, and fresh mushrooms.
- Lemon-Garlic Shrimp: Want to eat shrimp pasta but want to avoid the creamy, buttery indulgence in some restaurant dishes? This lemon-garlic shrimp is a happy medium - you get angel hair pasta and sautéed shrimp, all topped with basil, tomato, and lemon-garlic sauce. Who said pasta had to be loaded with calories? This order is one of the most balanced on the menu - it's loaded with protein, fiber, and even some carbohydrates to round out your meal.
- SkinnyLicious veggie burger: "I would order the Skinnylicious veggie burger," said registered dietitian nutritionist Katie Chapman. "I would also substitute lettuce for the bun and guacamole for the mayo. As a vegetarian, I tend to have less choices when eating out and may end up with something that doesn't fill in all my nutrition needs.
- Grilled Steak Medallions: "My go-to meal when meeting up with colleagues or my besties is their grilled steak medallions dish that has asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, and tomatoes.
- Grilled Salmon: Montemayor also loves the SkinnyLicious grilled salmon, telling INSIDER that "if you're looking for a simple and basic meal, this one is a good option." You can get all the nutrients from salmon without any of the sugary glaze most restaurants douse theirs in.
Low-Carb and Keto Options at The Cheesecake Factory
The Cheesecake Factory's extensive menu can be overwhelming for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet. Fortunately, several options can be adapted to fit these dietary needs. On a keto diet, most people aim to eat fewer than 50 grams of total carbs, or 25 grams of net carbs, daily. The net carb content refers to the total carb content minus the fiber content (1). However, many people follow less strict low carb diets, which can allow for up to 100-150 grams of total carbs per day (2).
Low-Carb Appetizers
- Stuffed Mushrooms: These mushrooms are stuffed with a blend of cheeses and herbs in a creamy wine sauce. Their combo of protein and fat makes them a fair choice for a low carb meal.
- Crispy Crab Bites: These miniature crab cakes are served with a mustard sauce. They make another great choice for a low carb meal thanks to their protein and fat content. You may want to round out the meal with a side salad or an order of asparagus for added nutrients.
- Buffalo Wings: A whole order may be a bit much for one person, but these spicy buffalo wings are loaded with protein and fat. Split an order in half, and you’ll still get over 50 grams of protein for just 8 grams of total carbs.
Low-Carb Entrees
- Pan Seared Branzino with Lemon Butter: Branzino is a mild white fish, and this fillet is served with vegetables and lemon slices. At just 10 grams of net carbs for the whole dish, it’s an excellent choice for keto dieters.
- Skinnylicious Tuscan Chicken: This entrée features grilled chicken breast and vegetables tossed in balsamic vinaigrette. It’s served over fresh vegetables and farro, a chewy and nutty-tasting whole grain. It’s also packed with protein, providing a whopping 81 grams, all for just 19 grams of total carbs.
- Grilled Branzino with Mediterranean Salsa: Another branzino entrée, this one is also served with fresh vegetables. The fish is topped with a salsa made from tomatoes, garlic, and herbs tossed in olive oil. Clocking in at fewer than 10 net carbs, it likewise makes a good choice for keto dieters.
Low-Carb Breakfast/Brunch (Available All Day)
- Farm Fresh Eggs: This meal features two eggs cooked your way. Ask your server to hold the standard sides of potatoes and bread, which are high in carbs. Adding a side order of old smokehouse bacon will only add 4 grams of carbs, and the side of grilled ham will add just 1 extra gram of carbs. Both options deliver hefty doses of extra protein and fat to keep you feeling full.
- Plain Omelet: A plain omelet has just 2 grams of carbs. However, you can add up to four toppings from a variety of meats, cheeses, and vegetables. The most that any single topping would add to your omelet is 4 total (3 net) grams of carbs, so feel free to pile them on.
- California Omelet: The California omelet contains avocado, mushrooms, green onions, tomatoes, garlic, shallots, sour cream, and two types of cheese. At just 8 grams of net carbs, it’s a solid keto choice. However, you may want to split it into two meals, as it contains nearly 100 grams of fat and over 1,100 calories.
- Spinach, Mushroom, Bacon, and Cheese Omelet: This omelet features spinach, mushrooms, bacon, green onions, and cheese. It’s an ideal choice for a keto dieter because it contains only 6 grams of net carbs. It also clocks in at 700 calories - a reasonable calorie count for a meal, especially if you’re on the keto diet for weight loss.
Modifying Existing Menu Items for Lower Carb Counts
Several entrées can be modified to significantly reduce their carb counts:
- Salads: Choose any salad on the menu, but leave out higher carb ingredients like croutons, rice noodles, crisp wontons, corn, black beans, tortilla strips, and fried onion strings. Choose a salad dressing other than the Chinese plum dressing, citrus honey dressing, and spicy peanut vinaigrette, as these are higher in carbs.
- Burgers: Enjoy any one of The Cheesecake Factory’s beef Glamburgers with no bun. Avoid crispy onion strings, barbecue sauce, crunchy potato crisps, and macaroni and cheese. Opt for a side salad instead of fries.
- Grilled Steak or Salmon: The New York strip steak, ribeye steak, filet mignon, and grilled salmon are all low carb choices. Stick to side options like side salad, green beans, sautéed spinach, broccoli, or grilled asparagus instead of mashed potatoes.
Items to Avoid
Beware of menu items that sound like they may be low in carbs but are often high in carbs due to sugary sauces or breading. Examples include the crispy Brussels sprouts and Korean fried cauliflower.
Dessert Considerations
Unfortunately, all of the desserts at The Cheesecake Factory are too high in carbs for a low carb or keto diet, including the “low-licious” cheesecake. While lower in carbs than the standard cheesecake, it still contains 37 grams of total carbs (30 grams of net carbs) per serving. One way to enjoy some of The Cheesecake Factory’s signature cheesecake while on a low carb diet would be to either split a piece of “low-licious” cheesecake with another person or eat half and save the other half for another day. "As for dessert, no matter what you order, share always! Because it's The Cheesecake Factory, I would get a slice of cheesecake," she said, adding, that "there are definitely lighter items on the menu … such as the bowl of fresh strawberries with whipped cream. But I really don't see any reason to not indulge once in a while. "I always try to share dishes whenever possible because the portions are so huge. I personally have a sweet tooth so I would forgo the appetizer and have dessert instead. I always say choose between the appetizer or the dessert."
General Tips for Healthier Dining
- Consider portion sizes: The Cheesecake Factory is known for its generous portions. Consider sharing an entree with a dining companion or asking for a to-go box at the beginning of your meal to pack up half for later.
- Choose lean proteins: Opt for grilled or baked chicken, fish, or turkey instead of fried or heavily sauced options.
- Load up on vegetables: Add extra vegetables to your meal whenever possible. Choose side dishes like steamed broccoli, grilled asparagus, or a side salad.
- Be mindful of sauces and dressings: Ask for sauces and dressings on the side so you can control the amount you use. Choose lighter options like vinaigrettes or lemon juice.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout your meal. This can help you feel full and prevent overeating.
