He remembers a man at the Hollywood Y, who was in incredible shape in his 50s, and asked him how he did it. The man told him, “You take care of yourself in your 20s and 30s and the rest will take care of itself.” Even as he began to break out with roles in Breaking Away (1979) and The Right Stuff (1983), the actor kept the advice in the back of his mind.

Quaid said, "It doesn’t mean you have to be there every day, but you do have to live your life with that in mind. Because if you let it go, every time it gets a little harder to get back. So I’ve always stayed with it.”

Over the years, Quaid has adapted his fitness routine to suit his changing needs. “I was a runner for about 35 years, but that gets hard on the knees and joints. So I turned to cycling and yoga, which I’m currently doing. Along with that, you still have to get into the gym and lift. Do the sit-ups.” His go-to workout is cycling, and he says, “I always feel better when I get off a bike than I did when I got in.”

Even during the coronavirus lockdown, Quaid maintained a consistent schedule. He and his fiancée Laura Savoie “try to just keep an even schedule,” he explains. “I’m still getting up early in the morning."

Quaid once had to lose 42 pounds for a role, saying, “I ate 1,000 calories a day and then exercised off 600 of those calories on the treadmill. It was basically a POW diet. I would not recommend it."
