The Battle with Cancer

In 2016, Christie was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid and a cluster of lymph nodes. During the procedure, her voice box was damaged, leaving her without a voice for about six months.

Christie shared her health updates on social media, detailing her diagnosis, surgery, and subsequent treatments. She expressed her gratitude for the support she received from her family, friends, and followers.

She described the moment she felt a small knot in her throat at the end of August. A doctor confirmed she had thyroid cancer and that it had spread to at least one lymph node. She had surgery to get her thyroid and a lymph node removed. When she came out of surgery the doctor had not only removed her thyroid and a cluster of lymph nodes, but he also had to remove part of her trachea because the cancer had spread. In the process, the nerve to her voice box was cut and she had no voice for a while, maybe up to 6 months, but she was home, and OK. A tube was placed in her throat, but got that removed and hopefully it started to heal QUICKLY! She had to take radiation soon and hopefully that was the end. Despite everything, she felt lucky and blessed to have so many supportive people around her helping her and her family get through this.

She expressed how important it is to see the doctor if you have something that doesn’t feel right. This journey only started 7 weeks ago and it had already progressed this far!

She expressed her appreciation for the support and all the well wishes, as it really helped keep her moving on the tough days. She was doing pretty well. Tube was out, stitches were out and the scar hopefully faded over the next year. She was a little emotional due to her thyroid hormone being out of whack, fighting tears most of the time. She still had no voice, the nerve was severed during the surgery. They scoped her throat last week and the doctor said it would probably be 8-12 months before she had her voice back. The left side of her voice box was paralyzed for now which made it hard to swallow completely and talk. She was looking into having her vocal chords injected so she could at least talk until the nerve heals. She took her Radioactive Iodine Treatment sometime after thanksgiving. Hopefully that killed off anything that’s left. She had a full body scan 8 days after RAI to see if anything comes up. Hopefully that was the end of treatment but she had to wait and see.

She made it out to the Leake Auction Company auction VIP party. She had surgery to inject her vocal chords, so she “temporarily” had her voice back for the next 2-3 months while they were waiting to see if the nerve that was severed in the original surgery was going to mend itself. The paralyzed side of her voice box has made no improvement at all so far but she was still optimistic. The doctor said it could take 8-12 months for the nerve to heal. She didn’t have a lot of volume but she did have HER voice tone back, so yay for small wins. She had to stop ALL of her thyroid medication 2 Saturdays ago in prep for her Radioactive iodine treatment that was scheduled for 12/19. Not having any thyroid hormone in your system (12 days now) is no joke. She was super tired and very high anxiety/agitation. She was super emotional and seemed to have little control of the tears. She also had been on a low iodine diet for the same 12 days and it REALLY sucks. No dairy, no eggs, no bread, nothing commercially processed and no eating out!! She was scheduled to take radioactive iodine on Monday and must be quarantined until her full body scan on 12/23. For her this was going to be the worst part of this journey so far. She was not able to be with her husband or kids or anyone for that matter for 5 days!!! She WILL GET TO BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS!! (Big win for her) As long as the scan on 12/23 came back clear she believed this would be the end of the treatment part of her cancer.
