Brian Patrick Flynn: From Film Dreams to HGTV Design Star

Brian Patrick Flynn is a prominent figure in the world of interior design, known for his work on HGTV and the Magnolia Network. However, his path to becoming a leading designer was not a straight one. Initially, Flynn harbored aspirations of becoming a film director. It wasn't until his friends recognized his exceptional talent for design that he considered home renovation as a career.

From Film Set to Dream Home: The Career Shift

Flynn's career took an unexpected turn when he realized his passion for design. This realization led him to HGTV, where he quickly rose to prominence, eventually designing the HGTV Dream Home in Morrison, Colorado, in 2023. This home, designed to complement the natural beauty of its surroundings, was awarded to one lucky winner, along with a cash prize.

HGTV Dream Home 2023: An Oasis in Morrison

The 2023 HGTV Dream Home, designed by Brian Patrick Flynn, was created to be a secluded and spectacular oasis, harmonizing with the natural splendor of Morrison, Colorado. Flynn's design philosophy emphasizes the importance of outdoor spaces that feel integrated with the surrounding environment.

Design Philosophy: Color, Texture, and Visual Weight

Color is everything in regard to TV design, and texture is everything and more for photography. Flynn's design philosophy is rooted in understanding the nuances of visual presentation, especially for television. He emphasizes the importance of color and texture, recognizing that they play different but equally crucial roles in how a design is perceived on screen and in photographs.

Another key aspect of Flynn's approach is visual weight. In wide shots, small styling objects can get lost, appearing as clutter. Therefore, Flynn carefully considers the visual impact of each element, ensuring that every piece contributes to the overall composition.

Personal Life: A Love Story on Ice

Brian married costume designer Hollis Smith in December 2017, marking a significant milestone in their 12-year relationship. Their wedding was a unique and adventurous affair, taking place in Antarctica surrounded by penguins, leopard seals, and scientists.

Design Installation Insights

The installation process for a home designed by Flynn is a meticulous undertaking, typically taking about 10 days from start to finish. The process is carefully orchestrated to maximize efficiency and minimize stress.

Truck Packing: The rugs should be the first things accessible once the door or gate at the back of the truck is opened. Once the rugs are taken off and put into their respective rooms, the furniture for bedrooms or home offices should be the next things to come off the truck. This ensures you won’t have furniture in the great room to have to maneuver around while you’re loading in the sleeping and task spaces. This expert packing of the truck is a major time saver and stress eliminator.

Art Installation: Hanging art! It sounds so silly, but if I hang a single piece of art two inches too high or low, it can have a massive snowball effect on the rest of the room in regard to creating proper balance. Flynn admits to being "über-control-freakish" about directing the installation of art. The placement of each piece is crucial to creating balance and harmony in the room.

Team and Collaboration

Flynn collaborates with a dedicated team, including carpenters and fine artists, to bring his design visions to life. My core group is in Atlanta, but my main scenic design team, Michael (carpenter), Celery (fine artist) and Dan (carpenter), live in Los Angeles and New York.
