Chase and his team of renovation experts comb the wilds of Maine for lakeside cottages (called ‘camps’ up here) in need of love, reimagine what these homes with a view could be and then transform them into idyllic getaways that millions of viewers tune in to dream of one day owning. Maine is known as "Vacationland" for its multitude of both summer and winter recreational opportunities.
For Linda and Jay Saulter, that dream turned to a reality when they decided to have the team from Maine Cabin Masters transform a broken down shack into their summer vacation property where they could relive their youth through the eyes of their grandchildren Taytum and Nash. Like many Maine getaways, the cottage has a dreamy water view of Great Pond in the Belgrade Lakes Region of the state. “We grew up spending summers on the water in Maine (the state’s nickname is Vacationland),” says Linda, “so the chance to see our grandkids experience the same idyllic upbringing is money well spent.”
“Many people who live in cities today didn’t grow up in those urban environments,” says Ryan. “A lot of those folks went to metropolitan areas for work but for many of them they never really left the country in spirit. Between the pandemic and unrest across the nation, there’s been a nation-wide leap to get back to rural roots.” Given its proximity to large urban centers in the northeast, Maine is a natural escape for people looking to find solace in uncertain times.

Between the solace that comes from living in a secluded lakeside setting and the sense of independence knowing that you’ve got access to plenty of water, fish, maybe a garden and unlimited supplies of firewood, the move to a lakeside cabin has added appeal in uncertain times. “We’re seeing more and more people embrace off-the-grid elements of country life,” says Chase. “We’re helping them with everything from solar and wind power to water catchment systems. It’s really about people looking for peace of mind knowing that they’ll be okay if the cities are struggling.”
Part of that comfort includes designing cabins with features that remind owners of happy times or special people in their lives. That’s where Ashley comes in by listening to owners and hearing what’s important to them-not just in design but in their lives.
“You want people to love a home, so reinforcing great memories through art and photography is an important part of what we do,” she says. “And when you strike the right balance between beautiful design and emotional connection you can see it on the faces of the owners when they walk into the finished camp. It’s why I love what I do.” In every restored camp are pieces of Maine as well, for Ashley has a team of artisans and craftsmen who use all manner of the state’s materials and themes to create indoor habitats that remind owners of all that’s great about Maine living.
For Chase, that can mean taking a discarded item in the attic or garage of the camp and bringing it back to life as something creative and distinctive.
“Most people see junk fit for a bonfire,” says Chase, “but I like to reimagine that forgotten canoe or old lobster pot into something memorable…maybe a book shelf, table or light fixture. I like keeping the history of a place alive with restored artifacts. As Ashley and Ryan will tell you, I never throw anything away.”
