Understanding Alkalinity and Its Importance
Understanding the importance of alkalinity in our diets sets the stage for creating a dressing that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also contributes to overall well-being. Alkaline foods help balance the body’s pH levels, promoting better digestion, increased energy, and overall vitality. Through exploring alkaline-rich ingredients I discovered some of my favorite foods are indeed alkaline foods that helped solidify my need to try some delicious alkaline salad dressings and continued recipe development.
While most traditional salad dressings are acidic, it is easy to adjust your recipes to suit your dietary needs or preferences. Acidic foods like citrus fruits, vinegar, and tomatoes are staples in our diets and bring brightness and tang to dishes. On the other hand, research shows that alkaline foods like leafy greens, cucumbers, and avocados are often associated with promoting balance in the body. It is important to remember that your body maintains a tightly regulated pH level, particularly in the blood. However, the pH of the foods you consume can influence digestion and overall health, making it worth considering how acidic or alkaline your meals are.
Common Acidic Ingredients to Watch Out For
Traditional salad dressings normally rely on acidic ingredients to enhance flavor. Below are some of the most common acidic ingredients:

- Vinegar: (e.g., balsamic, apple cider, white wine vinegar) is highly acidic with a pH of around 2-3.
- Citrus Juices: (e.g., lemon, lime) are acidic but bring a fresh, zesty flavor to dressings. Their pH typically ranges from 2-3 as well.
- Mustard: (e.g., Dijon) also contributes acidity.
- Buttermilk or Yogurt: are frequently used in creamy dressings like ranch, and these ingredients are slightly acidic with pH levels around 4-5.
Alkaline-Friendly Alternatives for Delicious Dressings
If your goal is a more alkaline-friendly approach, there are ways to make delicious dressings without heavily acidic ingredients. Here are a few ideas:
- Use Avocado as a Base: You can blend avocado with olive oil, herbs, and a splash of water or coconut milk for a creamy, alkaline dressing.
- Experiment with Tahini: This sesame seed paste has a slightly nutty flavor. You can mix it with olive oil, garlic, and a touch of water for a smooth dressing that is not too acidic.
- Include Cucumber or Herbs: Blend cucumbers, fresh parsley, or cilantro with olive oil and a pinch of salt for a refreshing, alkaline-forward dressing.
- Skip the Vinegar: Instead of vinegar, you can use a pinch of sea salt and a drizzle of olive oil to bring out the natural flavors of your salad ingredients.
- Try Coconut Aminos: A less acidic alternative to soy sauce, coconut aminos can add a hint of delicious savory taste to dressings.
Key Benefits of Alkaline Salad Dressings
Using whole, natural ingredients in your salad dressings is not just about alkalinity; it is also about maximizing nutrition and avoiding unnecessary additives. Below are a few reasons to consider incorporating alkaline-friendly salad dressings into your meals.
- Supports Balanced pH Levels
- Promotes Better Digestion
- Boosts Nutrient Absorption
- Provides Natural Energy
- Encourages Hydration
The Role of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an amazing ingredient that has been praised for its health benefits, particularly in the context of an alkaline-focused diet. While it is acidic in its natural form, ACV is considered alkalizing after digestion. A few examples of its health benefits include:
- Balances gut microbiota
- Supports digestive health
- Promotes detoxification
- Enhances energy levels
- Supports weight management
Incorporating ACV While Minimizing Acid Reflux
Below are some key tips for incorporating ACV into your salad dressing while minimizing the risk of acid reflux.
- Dilute the ACV: Undiluted ACV can irritate the esophagus and worsen acid reflux. You can do it with water or another liquid base like almond milk or coconut water.
- Pair with Alkalizing Ingredients: It will help you balance the acidity of ACV and promote a pH balance in your body. You can combine ACV with avocado oil or extra virgin oil, herbs (e.g., parsely, cilantro, basil), and sweeteners like raw honey or maple syrup in moderation.
- Start with Small Amounts: Your body may need time to adjust to ACV, and a small amount reduces the likelihood of irritation.
- Use Raw, Unfiltered ACV: Raw ACV is rich in probiotics and enzymes that aid digestion and can help reduce acid reflux.
- Consume in Moderation: Excess ACV, even when diluted, can irritate the digestive system.
- Drink Water Before Meals: Drinking water can help dilute stomach acid and create a more neutral environment. You can have a glass of water 15-30 minutes before consuming an ACV- based dressing.

Fresh Herby Creamy Salad Dressing
Something that surprised me is to how simple this dressing is. The best dressings in my opinion are ones that you can throw together in minutes without fuss. I hope this is a winner in your house too, especially if you are experiencing GERD or other acidic dietary restrictions or issues. This alkaline fresh herby creamy dressing can be tailored to your favorite herbs, so change it up and adding something different or even leaving out a flavor you don’t like.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp. basil, roughly chopped
- 1 tsp.
- 1 tbsp.
- 1 tbsp.
Instructions
- Put all dressing ingredients except the herbs in a blender and blend on high until completely smooth.
- Next, add the herbs and blend again.
- Season again with sea salt and black pepper if needed.
- Add to the salad ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well.
Holy Basil Alkaline Salad Dressing
This 10-minute alkaline salad dressing is a great way to use some of that holy basil you decided to grow (along with my holy basil tea!). Add holy basil to your diet. Like your parents used to hide vegetables in the lasagna, this dressing hides holy basil in the salad you're having for lunch. Multi-use. If you're worried you can't use all this dressing in one go, fear not.
Ingredients:
- 20 leaves fresh tulsi/holy basil ~2 sprigs
- 4 large sage leaves
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil or other tolerated oil
- ½ teaspoon ground sumac or 2 teaspoons lemon juice, if tolerated
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice alt.
Instructions
- Measure and wash the sage & holy basil. Then measure the oil and sumac, and set everything aside. If your blender or food processor is very weak, you may want to pre-chop both herbs.
- If you know you can’t tolerate citrus juices or vinegar, you may or may not be able to tolerate ascorbic acid. But if you can, mix ⅛ teaspoon ascorbic acid into 1 Tablespoon water, and then add it to your food processor. Alternatively, juice a fresh lemon and measure out 1 tablespoon.
- Add the ground sumac and oil. These 3 won’t emulsify like a traditional salad dressing unless you use lemon juice, but they will add sour and creamy notes; I do recommend using lemon juice or white vinegar if possible. You may need to tilt the machine to the side for the blades to whip at all- it took my little processor about a minute.
- Add herbs to mixture, and blend on high for 30 seconds-2 minutes, until the liquid is mostly uniform (unless you like the bit of herbs). Now it's done!
BLENDER: Use a small, high-powered blender to save yourself the time and effort of having to tilt your machine with its content to get it to blend right.
