Mastering TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Challenges in Old School RuneScape

TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Challenges is a solo combat minigame located in the inner area of Mor Ul Rek, within the Karamja volcano. Players face an increasing number of JalTok-Jads per challenge, offspring of TzTok-Jad. TzHaar-Ket-Rak, a TzHaar warrior, is tasked with reducing their numbers, and players can assist by accepting his challenges.

Understanding the Challenges

The first challenge involves fighting one JalTok-Jad, unlocking subsequent challenges until players face six simultaneously. The initial two challenges are accessible to anyone who can enter Mor Ul Rek's inner area. However, accessing the higher-level challenges requires completing the Inferno at least once. Completing each challenge rewards TokKul, and the player's best completion times are tracked on a scoreboard.

Combat Achievement Tasks

There are 11 Combat Achievement tasks available for TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Challenges, totaling 55 points. These tasks range in difficulty and offer various rewards upon completion.

  • The II Jad Challenge: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's second challenge. (Kill Count Elite - 4 points)
  • Facing Jad Head-on III: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's second challenge using only melee. (Restriction Elite - 4 points)
  • TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Speed-Trialist: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's first challenge in less than 45 seconds. (Speed Elite - 4 points)
  • Multi-Style Specialist: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's third challenge using a different attack style for each JalTok-Jad. (Mechanical Master - 5 points)
  • Facing Jad Head-on IV: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's fourth challenge using only melee. (Restriction Master - 5 points)
  • TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Speed-Chaser: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's third challenge in less than 3 minutes. (Speed Master - 5 points)
  • The IV Jad Challenge: Complete TzHaar-Ket-Rak's fourth challenge. (Kill Count Master - 5 points)

Preparing for the Challenges

Gear and Inventory Setups

While you don't need the absolute best gear, a well-prepared setup is crucial for success. Here are a few recommended gear progressions:

Budget Setup

  • Weapon: Magic Shortbow (i) with Rune Arrows
  • Head: Archer Helm (Fremennik Trials)
  • Cape: Ava's Accumulator (Animal Magnetism)
  • Body: Blue Dragonhide body
  • Legs: Blue Dragonhide chaps
  • Hands: Blue Dragonhide vambraces
  • Feet: Snakeskin Boots
  • Neck: Amulet of Glory
  • Ring: Explorer's Ring (any tier)

Mid-Tier Setup

  • Weapon: Hunter's Sunlight Crossbow + Moonlight Bolts (requires 50 Hunter, level 66 Ranged)
  • Neck: Amulet of Fury (or stick to Glory)
  • Shield: Book of Law (Horror from the Deep + Armadyl pages)
  • Hands: Red Dragonhide or Barrows Gloves if unlocked
  • Cape: Ava's Accumulator, Archer Helm

High-End Setup

  • Weapon: Toxic Blowpipe with Adamant+ darts
  • Head: God Dragonhide Coif
  • Body: God Dragonhide body
  • Feet: God Dragonhide Boots
  • Hands: Barrows Gloves
  • Cape: Ava's Accumulator / Assembler

Inventory Setup

  • 3x Ranging Potions
  • 1x Bastion Potion
  • 9x Saradomin Brews
  • 3x Super Restores
  • 10x Prayer Potions
  • 1-2x Prayer Regeneration Potions (optional but powerful)

Prayer Regen Potions slowly restore 66 prayer points per dose over time, making them great for long runs.

Useful RuneLite Plugins

  • FC Spawn Predictor: Shows current and next monster spawns for each wave, essential for learning wave rotations.
  • Ground Object Hider: Removes the cave floor texture that strains your eyes during long runs.
  • NPC Highlight: Allows you to tag monsters, making it easy to track priority targets like rangers and majors.

Mastering the Fight

Monster Breakdown

  • Bats (10 HP, max hit 4): Drain prayer per hit; deal with them quickly.
  • Blobs (20 HP, max hit 7): Split into smaller blobs on death; use them for safespots.
  • Rangers (40 HP, max hit 13): Accurate; pray Ranged.
  • Melees (80 HP, max hit 25): Heal nearby enemies below 50% HP; keep them stuck on rocks.
  • Majors (160 HP, max hit 54): Always start waves with Mage prayer.
  • Jad (250 HP, max hit 97): Uses all three styles; healers spawn at 50% HP.

Safe Spotting Basics

  • Italy Rock Method: Use the large rocks around the arena to trap melees and blobs.
  • NPC Blocking: Use rangers, majors, or blobs as “walls” to keep melees away.
  • Wave Control: Always know what's spawning next with FC Spawn Predictor so you can position early.

Jad Mechanics

  • Back legs rise → Magic attack: Pray Mage when the animation starts.

  • Ground slam → Ranged attack: Pray Range immediately.

  • Healers spawn at 50%: Three main strategies:

    1. Lure healers behind Italy Rock and kill one by one.
    2. Run through Jad with melee prayer to block healer attacks.
    3. Tank healers directly if you're confident and geared.

Always camp Ranged prayer as default since magic gives an audio cue, but range damage is instant.

Alternative Strategy: Dharok's Setup

An easy way to complete this challenge is to use full Dharok's, a Defence-lowering special attack weapon (elder maul, dragon warhammer, or Bandos godsword), Dinh's bulwark (optional), and Vengeance. Additionally, bring several anglerfish (you will need one for each attempt), super combat potions, and a locator orb.

Before you enter the challenge, equip the special attack weapon, cast Vengeance, drink a super combat potion, and eat an anglerfish. After you enter the challenge, activate Piety and activate your Defence-lowering special attack. When Jad spawns, instantly attack him.

If the special attack does not land and/or Jad hits below 80 damage, die or exit the challenge and try again. If the special attack lands and Jad hits high, activate Protect from Melee and switch to Dharok's greataxe. Lower your hitpoints to below 10 with the locator orb. If Jad attacks with magic or ranged, try changing your prayer as late as possible, especially if the healers are also attacking you. It should take at most 2-3 hits to spawn the healers. When they spawn, immediately lure them with darts, knives, or the Dinh's bulwark special attack.

Getting to the Fight Caves

Once you're ready to attempt your first real Fire Cape, here are the easiest ways to reach the Fight Caves entrance:

  • Amulet of Glory → Karamja: One of the fastest methods, then run west to the volcano.
  • Brimhaven Docks: Accessible via Ardougne, Camelot, or any POH teleport to the docks, then run east.
  • Minigame Teleport: Use the TzHaar Fight Pit teleport if it's off cooldown for an instant trip.

Climb into the Karamja volcano, enter the TzHaar city, and bank nearby to prepare for your run.

Final Tips

  • Take breaks: Logging out after a wave pauses progress.
