Mark Margolis (November 26, 1939 - August 3, 2023) was an American actor, renowned for his captivating performances across film, television, and stage. His career spanned decades, marked by memorable roles and collaborations with acclaimed directors.
Early Life and Education
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Jewish parents Fanya (née Fried) and Isidore Margolis, Mark Margolis briefly attended Temple University before venturing to New York City. At the age of 19, he pursued acting under the tutelage of Stella Adler at the Actors Studio, laying the foundation for his prolific career.
Early Career and Stage Work
After training with Adler, Margolis began his acting career in various plays. In 1962, he participated in the Broadway production Infidel Caesar, a play based on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Although the play closed in previews, Margolis continued his theatrical pursuits by founding Blue Dome, a touring theater company. In 1966, he played the role of a kidnapped UN Security Council member in Batman: The Movie.
Film Roles
Margolis was a familiar face in the films of Darren Aronofsky, appearing in his first six films, starting with Pi (1998). His filmography includes notable roles such as Alberto "The Shadow" in Scarface (1983), Mr. Morrison in Short Eyes (1977), and the New Priest in Immortals (2011). Other film credits include Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, Squanto: A Warrior's Tale, and Going in Style.
Television Career
Margolis's television career included recurring roles on numerous shows. In 1990, Margolis appeared in an episode of the science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. In 1991, he played Helmut Dieter in the soap opera Santa Barbara. He had recurring roles on The Equalizer (1985-1989), Quantum Leap, Oz (1999-2003), Law & Order, Crossing Jordan, Californication, Elementary, 12 Monkeys, The Blacklist, Snowpiercer, and Prodigal Son.
