SparkPeople.com is a free online diet and healthy living community with over 3 million members who provide support and motivation to each other. Hekler, E. B., Dubey, G., McDonald, D. W., Poole, E. S., Li, V., & Eikey, E. (2014) explored the relationship between changes in weight and utterances in an online weight loss forum and found that there is a relationship between the two. The platform was designed as a place where people could receive the weight loss support they need for free. SparkPeople is a goal-based weight loss program.
Key Features and Tools
Calorie Tracking
SparkPeople provides a comprehensive calorie tracker that allows users to monitor their daily food intake. The platform has a huge database of food, making it easy to log meals and snacks. Users can also scan the barcode of food items to quickly add them to their food log. SparkPeople gives you a "daily calorie goal", which is actually a range. A user indicated that the range recommended for them was 1200-1550.
Macronutrient Balance
The macronutrient recommendations place SparkPeople as a moderate fat, high carb, low protein diet - similar the guidelines of the USDA Food Pyramid.
Recipe Database
This section of SparkPeople offers a collection of over 300,000 healthy recipes submitted by members and the ability to share your favorite recipes with others. This is helpful for those who want to try new fruits or vegetables but aren’t sure how to use them in recipes.

Pros and Cons of SparkPeople
Pros
- Free Access: The majority of SparkPeople is free.
- Extensive Food Database: Their database of foods is actually more extensive than anything else I’ve tried to use. Part of this is the adaptability of it. They not only start you off with a base food list. However, as the user base enters nutritional values for their own foods, they are saved and accessible to the rest of the users.
- Community Support: So much support for no money at all. The calorie tracker, and the coaching is excellent, and great for motivation! The site has helped me tremendously. I love the fact that you can create your own group, have your own blog and interact with individuals who are going through the weight loss.
- Comprehensive Tracking Tools: Love the easy way to look up foods. Have used before and this is the best sight. Can save foods and groups that you use frequently. It helps to look at the daily and weekly totals of carbs, protein and fat.I LOVE the tracker! I have been using it for a while now and I track food, water and exercise. You also have access to a support group made up of people all over the world. You can join challenges or teams, it is all up to you! The best part is, it's free! You can use this with whatever food plan you are on. You can pay a little for the Spark diet plan but you do not have to, to use the whole site. Highly recommend for everyone who is trying to lose weight or keep it off!
- Educational Resources: A great site with great information to help you loose the weight with easy methods. They provide free online program for you to get fit.
Cons
- Calorie and Macronutrient Recommendations: However - the caloric and macronutrient recommendations may not suit everyone, and if you intend to build or tone muscle, the combination of low-calories and low protein may not be appropriate. A higher-carb diet is more appropriate for endurance athletes who are burning a lot of energy.
- American/Christian Content: I gave 3 stars only as the strong political, American and Christian content of some members overwhelms the community feed. Although Sparks states it is not allowed there is a heavy Christian presence. With one poster going as far as calling non-believers Heathens. New comers are not made to feel welcome in the community feed. The same members overwhelm the feed for years and treat the community as their own sounding board. There should be a way to block a members feed. There should be a way to limit content to our own country.
- Recipe Logging Issues: The SparkPeople app doesn't allow me to access any of the recipes I've inputed over the years, so I can't log them on the app (on the computer, I can, however). The only way I found to work around this is to create a new food item with the nutrition info from the recipe… but that is a huge extra step that is really unnecessary.
- Accuracy of User-Submitted Data: Another issue is members are allowed to upload product listings with nutrition content. Many times these are wrong making finding a correct product listing time consuming and frustrating.
Comparison with Other Weight Loss Apps
When comparing SparkPeople to other weight loss apps like MyFitnessPal, several differences emerge. One user noted that while both apps have barcode scanners and large food databases, MyFitnessPal allows users to add several items to their log at once, which is a significant time-saver. Additionally, MyFitnessPal offers a projection of what your weight would be in 5 weeks if every day were like today, which can be a strong motivator.
However, SparkPeople offers meal plans as an option, which MyFitnessPal does not. SparkPeople also has a Coaching Center, which some users may find beneficial. Ultimately, the choice between SparkPeople and other weight loss apps depends on individual preferences and needs.
SparkPeople LIVE!
SparkPeople live is a new paid feature of SparkPeople. This feature offers 24/7 live support for those following the Spark diet.
