I had never been under 260 since then. So, it felt good just to drop that weight, you know ease up my joints, let my body free. I kind of felt like that weight was loaded weight, too." He expressed that shedding the weight felt liberating, easing the pressure on his joints and allowing his body to move more freely.

Gronkowski emphasized that his weight loss was not just about shedding pounds but also about preparing his body for a new phase of life. He shifted his focus to building lean muscle and adopting a different training style. "Now it's time to build back upon it, put lean muscle on my body and get ready for the NFL season like I never have before. It's a different way, a different type of training style I'm doing and everything." While he initially lost weight, he was also focused on rebuilding his physique with lean muscle mass. As he mentioned, "I'm about 257 pounds right now… I'll definitely be at my weight when it's time to go."

While he admits to always being a "fast-food guy", he started paying more attention to nutrition as his career progressed. He credits Tom Brady's TB12 diet and his own experimentation with different foods for helping him understand what his body responds to best. "I’ve never not been a fast-food guy, but I didn’t know too much about nutrition at the beginning of my career. But when you start wanting to extend your career more, you start learning about what’s actually good for your body and what causes the least amount of inflammation. I’ve learned a lot from Tom [Brady] and his TB12 diet, and I’ve also learned a lot just from trying a bunch of different things and seeing what my body has responded to. What I ate in my early 20s is very different from what I eat now."

During his playing career, Gronkowski transitioned to a diet that was 75% plant-based. This involved incorporating more fruits and vegetables into his meals, with a focus on organic and unprocessed foods. "I do a lot of plant based for sure, but I still love my meat as well… A majority of the time, I like to cook at home when I can. I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, like celery. I also like sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. All of that good stuff, but basically everything has to be organic. It has to be real food and nothing processed. I still like my meat from time to time. So on top of that, I’ll add some nice wild fish or some nice organic grass-fed beef."

The Impact of Dietary Changes

Gronkowski emphasized the positive impact of these dietary changes on his overall well-being. He reported feeling better physically, which in turn helped him train and prepare more effectively. "It felt great. My body started feeling way better. There was something telling me that I had to make a switch in my diet in order to help me train and prepare better for football. When you’re 20, you can basically eat anything and get away with it and still be in shape without a worry. Now in my 30s, it’s totally different. I have to watch what I eat because I’m not a young buck anymore. I just love putting that fresh organic food in my body after a good workout. It keeps me energized and it keeps me rolling."

Current Routine and Lifestyle

Even in retirement, Gronkowski maintains a focus on physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. He incorporates a variety of activities into his daily routine, including pickleball, band workouts, weightlifting, walking, running, and yoga. "I love being fit. I love doing activities and I love living a healthy lifestyle. When I get off track a little bit, I can definitely tell. My energy will be down or I’ll go for a run and I’ll feel a little winded. So I definitely have a better awareness than ever before and I’m even more motivated to stay on top of my game, even though I’m not playing anymore." He also emphasizes the importance of hydration and clean eating. "I’ll wake up and probably have a protein shake to put some calories in my body, then I’ll chill, and then I’ll go out for some sort of physical activity. Sometimes I’ll go out and play pickleball. Other times it might be a band workout or do a heavy lift with weights. Maybe I’ll go for a walk or a run. Or sometimes, I’ll actually just do yoga instead. I like to switch it up a lot. But afterwards, I’ll do grab a juice or something to hydrate my whole body and eat a nice clean meal at nighttime."

Cheat Meals and Hometown Favorites

Despite his commitment to healthy eating, Gronkowski still indulges in cheat meals, particularly when he visits his hometown of Buffalo. He enjoys classic Buffalo cuisine, including wings, pizza, and chicken-finger subs. "When I earn a nice cheat meal, like a true cheat meal, it’s when I go back home to Buffalo. All the food there is delicious. I mean, that is where Buffalo wings started! So I love going home to the local spots and get wings, pizza, and a chicken-finger sub."

Gronkowski's Perspective on Health

Gronkowski's approach to health has evolved over time. He is now more aware of his body and how different foods and activities affect him. He emphasizes the importance of staying active and eating well, even in retirement. According to Gronkowski, "I love to work out because I love to eat food, and tasty food at that. It’s honestly one of my favorite things to do and the harder and longer you run and workout for, the more food you can enjoy that night. It’s a win-win."

"My mother did a great job managing us, making sure we were at all the practices, that we had rides, and we had our lunch packed, and making sure we had breakfast and dinner too." "My dad was out working two jobs and providing for our family so we could have food on our plate and also be able to afford to go play our sports."

Family meals were competitive, with everyone vying for their share of the food. His mother often made casseroles, which were convenient and nutritious meals that contained a variety of ingredients. "My mom would make the meals and she would make a lot of casseroles, basically a dish that was all in one. It would have veggies, broth, and a protein all in it, so it was just easy because you’d have everything in one serving. For dinner, my favorite dish was her chicken soufflé. Our meals would consist of her putting the dish down on the table, and then it was just became a free for all. You dug in and whoever got home last or went last sometimes missed out on the food, but mom was typically right with the portions and she made sure all of her sons were fed."
