Noni juice, derived from the fruit of the Morinda citrifolia tree, has been a staple in traditional medicine across Polynesia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and India for centuries. Touted for its potential health benefits, including minimizing the symptoms of life style-related diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and other vascular disorders, stroke, diabetes and cancer, noni juice has garnered attention as a possible aid in weight management. This article delves into the existing studies and research surrounding noni fruit and its impact on weight loss, exploring the potential mechanisms and providing a balanced perspective on its efficacy.
Traditional uses of Noni
Different parts of the noni plant including fruit, leaves, root, stem and bark are used in folk medicine. Noni fruit, leaves, flowers, bark, stems, and roots are used to make dye as well as medicine. People drink noni juice to help with a variety of ailments like general aches and pains, arthritis, constipation, and infections. Noni juice is made like most juices - from pressing the berries and combining the juices with water and sometimes with sweeteners. Noni juice, a popular beverage is known to contain some antioxidative and anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Examining the Research
While anecdotal evidence and traditional uses suggest potential benefits, it's crucial to examine the scientific studies conducted on noni fruit and weight loss. Several studies have explored the effects of noni juice on various health parameters, including body weight and composition.
Noni Juice and Muscle Mass Preservation
One such study, conducted by the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Science, investigated the effects of a low-calorie diet supplemented with Tahitian Noni Juice. The study included 90 participants between the ages of 30 and 50, all suffering from grade III obesity and clinically expressed secondary diastolic heart failure. Researchers split the patients into three groups, with two receiving daily servings of the juice and a control group simply maintaining the same diet. At the conclusion of the 42-day study, weight loss varied among the participants, but muscle mass told a different story. The patients who solely restricted caloric intake lost an average of 8.5 percent muscle mass, while those who also took Tahitian Noni Juice lost only 3 to 4 percent muscle mass, on average. “Those who drank Tahitian Noni Juice experienced improved fat loss, preserved muscle mass, and improved anthropometric indices, such as waist and thigh circumference,” Morinda’s Senior Director of Research, Brett West, said in a statement. Researchers attributed the positive results to the iridoids and phenolics present in Tahitian Noni Juice.
This suggests that noni juice may play a role in preserving muscle mass during weight loss, which is a significant advantage as muscle tissue helps burn more calories at rest.

Noni and Dyslipidemia
Another study explored the pharmacological basis for the medicinal use of Morinda citrifolia Linn in dyslipidemia using the aqueous-ethanolic extracts of its fruits (Mc.Cr.F), leaves (Mc.Cr.L) and roots (Mc.Cr.R).Mc.Cr.F, Mc.Cr.L and Mc.Cr.R showed antidyslipidemic effects in both triton (WR-1339) and high fat diet-induced dyslipidemic rat models to variable extents. All three extracts caused reduction in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in triton-induced dyslipidemia. In high fat diet-induced dyslipidemia all these extracts caused significant reduction in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), atherogenic index and TC/HDL ratio. Mc.Cr.R extract also caused increase in high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). The Mc.Cr.L and Mc.Cr.R reduced gain in body weight with a reduction in daily diet consumption but Mc.Cr.F had no effect on body weight and daily diet consumption. The data indicate that the antidyslipidemic effect of the plant extracts was meditated through the inhibition of biosynthesis, absorption and secretion of lipids. This may be possibly due partly to the presence of antioxidant constituents in this plant.
Noni's Impact on Exercise Performance
Early studies show that drinking noni juice improves endurance, balance, and flexibility. In one study, 40 highly trained athletes drank 100 milliliters of noni juice twice daily. Compared to the placebo group, those who had noni juice reported a 21% increase of endurance and improved antioxidant status. If you exercise regularly, adding noni juice to your hydration regimen might give you an energy boost and improve your endurance.
Other potential benefits
Research shows that drinking noni juice can play a role in treating degenerative musculoskeletal conditions. In one study, people with age-related spinal damage (cervical osteoarthritis or cervical spondylosis) reported less neck pain and stiffness when they combined noni juice with selected physiotherapies. However, treatment with physiotherapy alone does a better job of relieving pain and improving flexibility than noni juice alone. Also, research shows that noni juice can provide protection against toxicities related to smoking tobacco. It achieves this by:Protecting DNA from smoke-induced damage, Normalizing blood lipids, Controlling systemic inflammation, Reducing homocysteine
Potential Mechanisms of Action
Researchers have proposed several mechanisms through which noni fruit may influence weight management:
- Antioxidant Properties: Morinda citrifolia is reported to be rich in flavones, which are known to inhibit lipid biosynthesis. High cholesterol diet also causes oxidative stress (enzymatic and non-enzymatic) in rats, thus, increases oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) which plays key role in genesis of atherosclerosis. The presence of strong antioxidant activities in various parts of Morinda citrifolia may offer additional benefit in combating the oxidative stress caused by high cholesterol. The active constituents responsible for antioxidant activity include 3,3'-bisdemethylpinoresinol, americanol A, morindolin, isoprincepin, scopoletin, kaempferol, ursolic acid, quercetin and various other constituents
- Lipid Metabolism Regulation: Data indicate that the antidyslipidemic effect of the plant extracts was meditated through the inhibition of biosynthesis, absorption and secretion of lipids. This may be possibly due partly to the presence of antioxidant constituents in this plant.
- Muscle Mass Preservation: As demonstrated in the Russian study, noni juice may help preserve muscle mass during calorie restriction, potentially due to its iridoid and phenolic content.
Considerations and Cautions
While the research shows promise, it's important to approach noni juice consumption with awareness and caution:

- Added Sugars: Many noni fruit juices contain added sugars, which can lead to a variety of health issues, such as cavities, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. You should be sure to consult the label before consuming noni juice to get a good sense of the total sugars or other additives in the brand you’ve selected.
- Individual Variability: As with any dietary supplement, individual responses to noni juice may vary. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and overall health can influence its effects.
- Consultation with Healthcare Professionals: It's always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating noni juice into your diet, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
Integrating Noni Juice into a Healthy Lifestyle
If you choose to incorporate noni juice into your routine, consider these tips:
- Choose Unsweetened Varieties: Opt for noni juice without added sugars to minimize potential health risks.
- Moderate Consumption: Studies suggest that drinking up to 750 milliliters, or just over 25 ounces, of noni juice per day is safe.
- Combine with a Balanced Diet and Exercise: Noni juice should be viewed as a complementary tool, not a standalone solution. A healthy diet and regular physical activity are essential for sustainable weight management.
- Monitor Your Body's Response: Pay attention to how your body reacts to noni juice and adjust your intake accordingly.
