The pursuit of effective weight loss solutions has led to a surge in the popularity of various dietary supplements, including metabolic drops. These products often promise to "supercharge" the body's natural processes, leading to increased energy levels, reduced cravings, and ultimately, weight loss. However, a closer examination reveals a complex landscape of potential benefits, misleading marketing tactics, and hidden dangers. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of metabolic drops for weight loss, drawing on scientific evidence, expert opinions, and regulatory warnings to help consumers make informed decisions.
The Appeal of Metabolic Drops
Metabolic drops, often marketed as dietary supplements, come in various forms, including tinctures, gummies, and powders. They are frequently promoted as a way to "complement" or "supercharge" the body's levels of the gut hormone GLP-1, mimicking the effects of prescription weight loss drugs like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide). The appeal lies in their accessibility, as supplements are available over the counter without a prescription, unlike compounded drugs that require a consultation with a clinician.
One example is a tincture with a fresh citrus taste rounded out by earthy, nutty tones and a hint of spice. It supports metabolic health, healthy weight management, helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, curbs sugar cravings, modulates stress and supports healthy cortisol levels, and increases energy levels in the moment and over time.
The Promise of GLP-1 Supplements
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. GLP-1 drugs, like Wegovy and Zepbound, have been proven effective for weight loss by mimicking the hormone's effects and prolonging its presence in the bloodstream, leading to appetite suppression.
However, experts caution against equating the effects of these prescription drugs with those of over-the-counter GLP-1 supplements. Jamie Alan, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, states that "If you can buy it without a prescription, it’s not an actual GLP-1 drug. It is something else that’s marketed to support your endogenous GLP-1 production. These things are just older weight loss [supplements] that are rebranded, and there’s really no scientific evidence for these.”

Jeff Ventura, the vice president of communications for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a trade group for the supplement industry, said in a statement that there are “no direct comparators” for GLP-1 drugs in the dietary supplement industry. “While some supplement ingredients have shown promise in limited studies related to metabolic health and weight management, they do not have the same effects as GLP-1 drugs,” Ventura said.
Questionable Ingredients and Misleading Claims
Many GLP-1 supplements contain ingredients like ashwagandha, green tea extract, berberine, chromium, and saffron extract. While some of these ingredients have been linked to potential benefits like stress relief or modest effects on body weight, the scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness for weight loss is often limited or mixed.
Alan notes that ashwagandha and green tea extract are among the natural ingredients that have been recycled in diet products for decades. While ashwagandha is often advertised as a stress reliever and cortisol is tied to weight gain, there’s little proof the evergreen shrub directly helps shed pounds. Green tea and green tea extract may have a “possible modest effect on body weight,” according to mixed research cited by the Office of Dietary Supplements, some of which links the extract to liver damage.
Furthermore, some brands explicitly state that their products "do not contain synthetic GLP-1 and are not a GLP-1 agonist drug," raising questions about the validity of their marketing claims. Alan warns that it is very tricky, because they’ll put that big ‘GLP-1’ on there and it makes you think, ‘Well, maybe this is the drug,’ if you’re not thinking about how to read these labels or if you don’t know how to read these labels.
Regulatory Concerns and Hidden Dangers
The FDA does not regulate dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they hit the market. This lack of oversight raises concerns about the potential for harmful ingredients, inaccurate labeling, and misleading claims. The agency advises consulting a health care provider before adding any supplement to your regimen.

The End of Compounded GLP-1 Drugs and the Rise of Supplements
The FDA's decision to declare the shortages of tirzepatide and semaglutide over has led to the removal of compounded versions of these drugs from the market. This has created a void that GLP-1 supplement sellers are eager to fill, potentially exploiting vulnerable consumers with misleading claims and unproven products.
Dr. W. Scott Butsch, director of obesity medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, expresses concern about the ubiquity of compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide in recent years, stating that “The FDA states very clearly: These compounded versions are not the same. They don’t have the same ingredients. They have not been tested.” He added that compounders and now supplement companies are using lower pricing to target an already vulnerable clientele.
A More Holistic Approach to Weight Loss
While the allure of a quick fix is understandable, experts emphasize the importance of a holistic approach to weight loss that focuses on sustainable lifestyle changes. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and the director of Tufts University’s Food Is Medicine Institute, states, “There’s no simple dietary fix that’s going to do what these drugs do in a short amount of time.”

Mozaffarian notes that healthy fats and high-fiber foods have been shown to trigger GLP-1 production naturally. He advises spending money on healthy food rather than on supplements.
