Marney Gellner is a prominent figure in the Twin Cities sports broadcasting scene, with over 20 years of experience covering local teams. Known for her work with the Timberwolves, Lynx, and Twins since 2002, Gellner has been a sideline reporter, play-by-play announcer, and overall a respected voice in Minnesota sports. Her career highlights include becoming the first female play-by-play announcer in Twins history, demonstrating her versatility and expertise in a male-dominated field.
A Career of Firsts and Accomplishments
Marney Gellner's career is marked by several significant achievements. She has called Minnesota Lynx games for nine seasons and filled in as the lead announcer for Timberwolves broadcasts. In March, she became the first woman to provide play-by-play commentary for the Twins. She handled three games as the team’s radio and television broadcaster, including exhibition games, marking a memorable professional moment. She said, “It’s incredibly heartwarming that the Twins themselves trusted me and know that I can handle this…I will never forget this.”
During these broadcasts, Gellner received positive feedback and support from her colleagues and fans. Her playful banter with Twins radio analyst Dan Gladden was a highlight for many listeners. Despite initial concerns from some fans who misinterpreted their on-air interactions, Gellner clarified that their relationship was strong and that Gladden's style was consistent with how he treated all his partners.
Gellner noted feeling more comfortable in her second game. She understood how to organize her game information in the booth more efficiently. Gladden assisted her in keeping up the pace by constantly delivering critical details such as pitch count, score, inning, and outs. Gladden said, “If you know Marney Gellner, I don’t care if you’re doing broadcasts, on a plane ride, or on a bus trip, you’re having fun.”
Balancing Career and Personal Life
In addition to her broadcasting career, Marney Gellner emphasizes the importance of work-life balance. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she reevaluated her priorities and made a conscious effort to spend more time with her family. She reduced her Lynx game schedule to allow for impromptu travel with her husband and children and more unstructured time at home.

Health Journey and Advocacy
In early 2023, Marney Gellner faced a personal health challenge when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She chose to share her journey publicly to encourage other women to get regular mammograms. Gellner emphasized the importance of early detection, noting that her cancer was discovered during a routine screening before she experienced any symptoms. She explained, "About three weeks ago I found out that I have breast cancer…It was just detected in my yearly mammogram. I did not find a lump…I just go in every year like we're told to do."
Gellner's openness about her diagnosis led many women to schedule their mammograms or encourage their loved ones to do so. She stated, "I have had several women message me that they went to get their first mammogram, or their first mammogram in five years, or they finally got their mom to go, or a husband finally got his wife to go."
Gellner aimed to be a voice and advocate for breast cancer awareness while moving past the diagnosis and avoiding being defined by it.
