Mark Hamill: From Star Wars to Staying Healthy

Mark Hamill, the actor who became a global icon with his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, has experienced a career and life filled with remarkable moments and transformations. From the rigorous training regime he underwent for his initial role to his reflections on aging and health, Hamill's journey offers insights into the importance of perspective, humor, and self-acceptance.

Early Career and the "Brutal Training Regime" for Star Wars

In 1977, Star Wars catapulted Mark Hamill into immense fame. According to Rolling Stone, to prepare for his role as Luke Skywalker, Hamill went through a “brutal training regime” to shape up. The actor lost a reported 50 pounds before embodying Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Disney production that is setting pre-sale box office records. It turns out Hamill wasn’t the only one needing to shape up. Disney expected actress Carrie Fisher, who plays Princess Leia, to lose weight for her comeback to the screen.

A Shift in Perspective

The passage of time has allowed Hamill to view life with a more relaxed approach. As he noted, with age, "you don’t take everything so seriously, because it’s easier to put things in perspective." This perspective influences how he appreciates life's moments, including those often taken for granted when younger.

Considering Retirement and Embracing Simplicity

At 73, Hamill has contemplated retirement. "My wife [Marilou York, 70] and my agent, they’re the only ones that don’t like the R word [retirement]," he jokes. He reached a point where he felt he had accomplished much of what he wanted and considered a "good exit" as important as a "good entrance." His vision of retirement is simple: "Wander around the beach with a metal detector, yell at kids to get off my lawn." Hamill finds joy in reading, watching Turner Classic Movies, and spending time with his family and dogs.

The Importance of Relationships

Hamill's 46-year marriage offers a lesson in acceptance and listening. He met his wife, Marilou York, when she was his dental hygienist. "I went in to get my teeth cleaned. And I was starstruck. I thought she was fabulous. I wanted to get to know her and date her." Their successful marriage underscores the value of not questioning what works and simply accepting it.

Career Diversification and Voice Acting

Early in his career, Hamill sought diverse roles, venturing into Broadway to perform character roles in productions like "Elephant Man," "Amadeus," "Harrigan 'N Hart," "The Nerd," "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks," and "Room Service." His transition to voice acting, particularly his iconic role as the Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series" and the Arkham video games, marked a significant turning point. "It was only then, when I came back and auditioned and got the animated role of the Joker…that I really was accepted into the animation voiceover community."

Hamill appreciates the anonymity and creative freedom that voiceover work provides. "A character actor is defined by the fact that you see the character; the actor disappears. Animation does that for everybody," he explains. Voice acting allows him to play a wide range of characters he wouldn't be cast as in live-action roles, without the pressures of physical appearance or memorizing lines. "They cast with their ears, not their eyes. So the range of characters I got to play that you’re not physically right for - a 6-foot-2 muscle-ripped Italian bodyguard - was stunning."

Humor as a Coping Mechanism

Hamill uses humor to navigate life's challenges. "I always try and approach things with humor. I never rant and get angry and curse and so forth. I know there are kids who follow me. So I’m G-rated in that regard, but I always try and find humor in it." He believes humor can be a powerful tool for persuasion and connection. "But I think you can move people and persuade people more with humor. And that’s what I try and do. So we have fun."

Embracing the Present

Hamill acknowledges the futility of dwelling on past regrets. "It’s useless not to let go of things, because if you miss the bus there’ll always be another. And I appreciate things more." He expresses surprise at his continued busyness, mentioning his roles in recent and upcoming movies like "The Life of Chuck," "The Wild Robot," "The King of Kings," "The Long Walk," and "The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants."

The Impact of Family

Family plays a significant role in Hamill's life. He cherishes the experience of seeing the world through the eyes of his granddaughter, Autumn. "Seeing the world through Autumn’s eyes, it’s always a thrill."

Weight Loss Journey: A Fan's Perspective

An unrelated but inspiring weight loss journey was undertaken by a fan, who documented his experience on Temple of Geek. This individual's story highlights the challenges and triumphs of weight loss, offering a different perspective on health and transformation.

In April 2017, at Fan Expo Dallas, this individual's weight loss journey began. On January 1, 2018, he weighed 449lbs, the heaviest he had ever been. "I stepped on a scale and the numbers that showed up on the screen made me disgusted." Months prior, his doctor had diagnosed him with diabetes, leading him to confront his health issues.

He joined his office's "Biggest Loser" challenge, meticulously logging his food intake using the "Lose It" app to track calories. "I started to log everything I put in my mouth using an application on my phone called “Lose It.” This helped me track what I was eating and plan my day better for meals so I did not exceed my daily calorie needs." This approach led to significant weight loss. By March 31st, he had lost 50lbs and won the challenge. "The weight started to come off. It was glorious! By March 31st, I lost 50lbs (and won the challenge)!" He continued to lose weight, reaching 392lbs.

To further his progress, he created the "From Jabba to Thor" challenge, aiming to emulate Chris Hemsworth's physique from the Thor movies by May 22, 2019. "I am calling this challenge “From Jabba to Thor”. I am going to push myself to become as close to Chris Hemsworth’s version of Thor that I possibly can by May 22nd 2019." He planned to use modified versions of Hemsworth's workout routine, dedicating 90 minutes a day to exercise and consulting a nutritionist. "One of the articles I read stated that he worked out for 90 minutes a day. Find my maintenance calories and subtract 500 calories from it to find my daily intake. The Lose It app pretty much does that for me. Once I get into this, I plan on scheduling time with a nutritionist to ensure that I am eating the right foods." He documented his journey to inspire other overweight geeks to take control of their health. "I hope that throughout this journey, I might be able to inspire other geeks who might be over weight to take charge and start their transformation."
