Olin as Claire in The Artist's Wife

In The Artist's Wife, Olin plays Claire, whose artist husband Richard (played by Bruce Dern) is diagnosed with dementia on the eve of his newest exhibition. As Richard struggles with the effects of the disease that is preventing him from completing his paintings, Claire endures his increasingly erratic behavior and cruel comments with great understanding and support. Still, with the weight of being sole caregiver weighing on her, Claire reaches out to Richard’s estranged daughter, Angela (Juliet Rylance), who initially wants nothing to do with her father whom she feels abandoned her years earlier. Claire’s passion for returning to painting is reignited when she has a dalliance with Angela’s handsome male nanny Danny (Avan Jogia). But she remains loyal to Richard, and even completes his unfinished work in order for him to revel in what likely will be his final exhibition.

The Artist’s Wife is about marriage, loyalty, love and rediscovering one’s passions.

Olin notes that Claire has been Richard’s silent partner for years. She’s given up her own dreams of becoming an artist to support him. "In Claire’s case, she really truly becomes the caregiver when he is diagnosed and becomes that sick. But I also think that throughout their lives, she has worried more about him and his concerns than her own. That’s very relatable. I think it’s a female thing, to a large extent. We start to give up parts of who we are because we love, because we care, because we have to, because we feel we need to. And, due to this tragedy, Claire has to look into herself and reconnect with her own creativity. A lot of women leave big parts of who we are behind us because life asks us to."

Olin is unlike Claire in her life. "I don’t “try” to make it work. Also, I try to encourage my daughter (Tora) to be sort of impossible. (She laughs.) To be “trouble.” And not to be like, “Oh, I’m going to make it work,” and start giving up who you are and diminishing who you are to make things work."
