Lee Pace, known for his diverse roles across film, television, and theater, has garnered attention not only for his acting prowess but also for his physical transformations, particularly his role as Cleon in Apple TV+'s Foundation. This article delves into Pace's approach to diet and fitness, revealing a balanced regimen that combines intense training with mindful relaxation.
Physical Transformation for "Foundation"
In Foundation, Pace plays multiple versions of Emperor Cleon, demanding significant physical stamina and transformation. As Pace says, “It’s like we took the first season and added diesel to it”. His preparation for the role involves specific physical goals tailored to each season. For the first season, the aim was to "build a real emperor's body," while the second season required a leaner and meaner physique.
The Role of Yoga
During the pandemic, Pace incorporated yoga into his routine. He shares, "We started shooting before the pandemic and I was lifting a whole lot of weights, and then the pandemic started, and I basically cleared off a corner of the barn and did a bunch of yoga." Pace tells ABC Audio about how he got into shape to better look the part, "I did yoga every day for about two hours. The regimen helped both Pace's body, and his acting." This practice not only helped him physically but also enhanced his acting by improving his sense of control and balance. "It was such an opportunity to think about my health, to think about, you know, this character that I was playing and really kind of think about…you know, your balance, thinking about what you're stretching, thinking about a specific part of the body and how you can control it," he says. "That's what the character is, he's about control," says Pace. "It's like, you know, trying to hold sand in your hand. It's a slippery thing.
A Balanced Approach to Fitness
Pace's philosophy emphasizes balance, rest, and proper nutrition, rather than solely focusing on weightlifting and protein shakes. He acknowledges the importance of rest, stating, "I get tired-but then I take more naps. You have to rest." This aligns with his broader life philosophy of appreciating time, getting good sleep, and eating good food. "You appreciate your time. You get good sleep, you eat good food."
Working with a Trainer
Much of Pace's body-building journey can be credited to his long-time trainer, Ian Benson. “Ian has worked with me on every season’s Cleon,” Pace notes. “We worked out in Ireland, we worked out in Malta, we worked out in the Canary Islands.” Together, they spent hours training in the gym, pushing their limits. Benson’s approach focuses on maximizing energy output while tailoring workouts to Pace’s specific needs, which has been key in achieving Cleon's dramatic physique changes. In Pace’s words, “My body doesn’t naturally look like it did in season two."

Pace's Diet
Pace's diet appears to be simple and balanced. For breakfast, he enjoys "breakfast foods" like toast, eggs, fruit, and coffee. “Breakfast foods,” he laughs. “If there’s a good avocado, we’ll definitely have that.”
A Relaxed Lifestyle
Pace embodies a relaxed lifestyle, which influences his approach to fitness, eating, and living. “It was a very relaxed time in my life,” Pace recalls of the moment. This relaxed attitude contributes to the effortless cool he exudes, both on and off-screen.
