Missing the satisfying crunch of tortilla chips on your keto diet? Crave-worthy keto tortilla chips are surprisingly easy to make at home using low-carb tortillas. This recipe provides a simple and delicious way to enjoy a crispy, salty snack without derailing your dietary goals.
Why Keto Tortilla Chips?
Experienced low-carb followers know that there are a lot of great options to use as "chips" on a keto diet. There are pork rinds, vegetable chips, keto cheese chips, and homemade keto crackers. These options are great, but I've found that sometimes the only thing that works as well as a chip is an actual keto chip.
Traditional tortilla chips are typically off-limits due to their high carbohydrate content, stemming from the flour and corn used in their production. However, by utilizing low-carb tortillas, you can create a satisfyingly crunchy alternative that fits perfectly within a ketogenic lifestyle. This recipe offers a way to indulge in your favorite dips and snacks without the guilt.
Ingredients You'll Need
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. You'll only need a handful of ingredients:
- Low-carb tortillas: The star of the show! You can use my homemade almond flour tortillas or purchased tortillas. If you decide to buy them, check the ingredients and make sure that they fit within your dietary goals. There are many brands on the market. This process has worked with every type we tried. If you are lucky enough to have low carb tortillas in your stores you can use them. These days you can find low-carb wraps perfect for the keto diet everywhere. And the varieties are endless, from high-protein and whole wheat to ones made with almond flour and flaxseed. Of course, this process works with ANY type of tortilla, including gluten-free and regular ones.
- Olive oil: For brushing or spraying, helping the chips crisp up and allowing seasonings to adhere. Olive Oil is lightly spritzed or brushed on the pan and over the chips. If adding salt or other spices, it's needed so that these ingredients stick. It's optional if you're not adding anything.
- Salt: To Season your chips. I use Maldon sea salt.
- Optional seasonings: Here's where you can get creative! Consider cayenne pepper for a kick, cheddar cheese powder for cheesy chips, barbecue seasoning for BBQ flavor, taco seasoning for a Dorito-style experience, or a simple blend of garlic powder, cumin, and chili powder. Seasonings - We used salt and cayenne pepper but you can use many other flavorings. There are plenty of ways to add variety to homemade keto tortilla chips.

Oven-Baked Keto Tortilla Chips
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Or preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Prepare the tortillas: Stack a couple of low carb tortillas on a cutting board and using a pizza cutter or sharp knife cut the tortillas into wedges. Cut each tortilla into 8 equal-sized triangles with a pizza cutter. The easiest ways that I have found to cut the keto friendly tortillas is with a pizza cutter, pastry cutter, or kitchen scissors. The size will depend on you. You might have to put these on 2 baking sheets or make them in batches.
- Season the chips: In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, salt, and cayenne pepper.Brush the oil and spice mixture on both sides of each tortilla triangle. Lightly brush (or spritz) the tops with olive oil and sprinkle salt (or other seasonings) on top. If desired, line the cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
- Arrange on a baking sheet: Line two large baking pans with silicone mats or parchment paper.Spread them out onto the lined pans in a single layer. Place the tortilla triangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. For maximum crispness, make sure you are giving the keto chips enough space. Don’t overcrowd when baking or air frying - which could mean cooking in batches. Spritz a sheet pan with olive oil and spread the pieces into a single layer. Don't overcrowd the pan.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the tortillas are golden brown and crispy. Turn over after 5 minutes for even baking. Bake for 7-8 minutes, flipping halfway through until they reach the desired crispiness. Bake the chips in the oven until they're the desired crispiness, flipping halfway through. It usually takes about 7-8 minutes. These simple almond flour tortilla chips make a wonderful low carb appetizer. Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 5-6 minutes. Take them out, flip them over and spray with the nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle the remaining spices over top and place them back in the oven.Bake for 5-6 more minutes or until they are golden brown. Check a few times to make sure they are not burning. Cooking times may vary. Carefully watch the first few times until you get a feel for how they do in your oven.
- Cool and enjoy: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
Air Fryer Keto Tortilla Chips
- Preheat the air fryer: For keto tortilla chips in the air fryer, preheat your air fryer to 325 degrees. Heat the air fryer to 325° F.
- Prepare and season the tortillas: Cut each tortilla into small triangles. Cut each wrap into 8 wedges.Cut the tortillas in half, then cut each half in thirds, creating 24 triangles.
- Air fry: Brush or spray the tortillas with oil and sprinkle with salt. Spritz tops of chips with cooking spray, then sprinkle with salt. Cook for 7 minutes. Bake them at 350°F and for 5 minutes on each side.
Tips for the Crispiest Chips
- Don't overcrowd: For maximum crispness, make sure you are giving the keto chips enough space. Don’t overcrowd when baking or air frying - which could mean cooking in batches.
- Spray generously: For best chip results, spray your pan and the top of the chips well with oil. This gives a really nice crunch to the chips and also stops them from sticking.
- Monitor closely: The total cooking time will be influenced by the tortillas that you use. Homemade chips won't get crispy if they are too saturated with oil or they are not cooked long enough.
Flavor Variations to Explore
The possibilities are endless when it comes to flavoring your keto tortilla chips. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Cheesy: Sprinkle them with cheddar cheese powder before baking!
- BBQ: Sprinkle them with barbecue seasoning before baking!
- Spicy: Add cayenne pepper to the salt before baking.
- Taco: Use taco seasoning for a Dorito style flavor.
- Chili Lime: Vigorously mix olive oil with lime juice in a 3 to 2 ratio. Brush the chips with the mixture.
Serving Suggestions
Now that you have tortilla chips you can enjoy on a low carb diet, you may be looking for low carb dipping ideas. Chips are meant for dipping! However delicious these are by themselves they are perfect for dips and salsa. These are sturdy chips that can hold a salsa or chunky dip. The "recipe" itself is not complicated - but the ways you can use these chips are fantastic!
These chips are excellent with guacamole, keto-friendly salsa, nacho cheese dip, dipped in keto ranch dressing, or with this lemon dill sauce. Serve them with any kind of low carb dip you want for a party snack. They're also fantastic with Keto Queso - A keto queso dip that's ready in 5 minutes! Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip - A Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip that's perfect when you need a good keto dip or appetizer. Or even with Keto Deviled Eggs are a classic recipe that everyone loves.
You can even make nachos with them. Pile them high on a cookie sheet and top with shredded cheese. Melt under the broiler and top with whatever toppings you want. I have a pulled pork nachos recipe that uses store bought keto chips.
Storing Your Keto Tortilla Chips
These easy tortilla chips keep well stored in an airtight container and should last up to 5 days when you need a keto snack. Keep these low-carb tortilla chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. I will confess that's an estimate as they did not last 2 days with us.

Can you eat tortilla chips on a low-carb diet?
Most tortilla chips are high in carbs and not recommended for a low-carb diet. However, chips made from a low-carb flour tortilla are also high in fiber, so the net carb count is lower, making them ideal for a carb-conscious diet.
A Note on Tortillas
For these chips we are using our Keto Tortilla recipe. The ingredients for that recipe are below.
- Almond Flour- This is the main flour that we'll use for our tortillas.
- Coconut Flour - A small amount of coconut flour gives the perfect texture to the tortillas.
- Baking Powder- This allows the dough to puff up a bit when cooked.
- Kosher Salt - Added for flavor.
- Egg - An egg binds all of the ingredients together and aids in browning.
- Water - Use water to get the right dough consistency.
- Cooking Oil Spray - For spraying your pan and the chips.
Although you can easily find low carb tortillas in most food stores, most of them are made with wheat which adds gluten. A cast iron tortilla maker works great to flatten out the dough quickly. But if you don’t have one, a rolling pin works too. It just takes more time to roll the dough out by hand. Although you may be able to use uncooked tortillas for this keto chips recipe, I fried them first. Then, I let the cooked tortillas sit in the refrigerator overnight. When I was ready to make the low carb tortilla chips, I used a pizza cutter to slice the chilled tortillas into triangles. Next, I placed them onto a baking sheet that was sprayed with a little olive oil. After baking at 350°F for about 7 minutes, I took the pan out of the oven and flipped each triangle. I also sprinkled on a little more salt. I typically just add salt to the chips. But you can add in some spices like garlic powder, cumin, and or chili powder for added flavor.
The other great thing about this recipe for low carb tortilla chips is that you can use store-bought tortillas like these instead of making your own. I like to use psyllium husks in the tortillas because it's a fantastic ingredient to use in gluten-free bread. And, psyllium has zero net carbs because all the carbs are fiber carbs. If you are doing a lot of low carb keto cooking, you should definitely keep some psyllium powder in your pantry. I've started using psyllium a lot more after I discovered my egg white sensitivity. I used to eat tons of eggs before I got tested for food sensitivities. The main symptom that I have after eating egg whites is that I get tired. It's easy to make your own keto chips at home.
