For those who adore Italian cuisine, this recipe for homemade Keto Italian Seasoning is a must-try! Crafted with low-carb dried herbs and spices, this seasoning mix simplifies Keto Italian cooking. It requires less than 5 minutes to prepare and utilizes herbs and spices that you likely already have in your pantry.
Why Make Your Own Keto Italian Seasoning?
Many commercially available Italian seasoning mixes contain high-carb ingredients, such as sugar, potato starch, or other fillers. Making your own allows you to control the ingredients and ensure it aligns with your dietary needs. Store-bought Italian seasoning may contain some nasty fillers and sugar. A supermarket-bought blend may not have the punchy flavor you want, and may contain sugar and more salt than necessary to compensate for it.
While some commercially-produced low-carb Italian seasoning mixes do exist, making it at home is easy. I make most of my seasonings at home because I can control the quality of the ingredients and avoid the extra salt.
Ingredients for Keto Italian Seasoning
To create this recipe, I researched herbs and spices commonly used in Italian dishes. This dried Italian seasoning recipe is a homemade blend of aromatic, flavorful herbs and spices that you can customize to your palate.
Here's what you'll need:

- Oregano: Typically used in larger quantities in Italian dishes.
- Basil: Another staple herb in Italian cuisine, also used in larger quantities.
- Thyme: A fragrant herb that adds depth to the seasoning.
- Sage: An earthy herb that complements the other flavors.
- Marjoram: A milder relative of oregano, with a slightly different flavor profile. McCormick contains only marjoram, basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, savory and sage.
- Chives: Adds a mild onion-like flavor.
- Red Pepper Flakes (Optional): For a touch of heat. Although red pepper flakes are low in FODMAPs according to Monash University's Low FODMAP Diet App, some people respond poorly to them for other reasons. If you don't like spicy food, or if your stomach doesn't tolerate it well, the red pepper flakes are completely optional. The only spice that isn't traditionally used in Italian cooking is red pepper flakes, also known as crushed red pepper.
- Dried parsley: Found in the seasoning aisle in the supermarket. If you find an old bottle in the pantry check your use-by date first.
- Onion Flakes: These dried, caramelized flakes of onion add a browned-onion flavor.
- Garlic granules: Using granules in this recipe instead of powder gives you a bit of texture as well as flavor.
You can substitute the garlic powder to onion powder, add dried parsley, or more red chili flakes. If you don’t have all these spices, feel free to omit.
How to Make Keto Italian Seasoning
The process requires zero explanation other than what is in the recipe card below.
- Measure out your ingredients.
- In a bowl or air-tight container, measure out and add all of the herbs and spices listed in the recipe.
- Mix everything together in a small mixing bowl until well combined.
- Stir with a spoon or cover and shake until well combined. I use a small, glass canning jar (like the one pictured above).
- Transfer to a pint-sized mason jar or other airtight container.
- Shake before each use to make sure the ingredients are still evenly distributed in the jar.
To make your own seasoning substitute recipe in the Thermomix, just add all the ingredients at once and mix 5 sec/speed 3.
Storage Instructions
The best way to store your Italian herb blend is in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place like your spice cabinet or pantry. Transfer your own Italian Seasoning blend to a pint-sized mason jar. Keep the seasoning in an airtight container, a drawer or cupboard.
Shelf Life
As long as you’re not using stale dried herbs and spices, this seasoning should keep for up to 3 months in the pantry.

How to Use Keto Italian Seasoning
This is one of the most flexible spice mixes I make - it has so many uses! This homemade Italian Seasoning is perfect for so many recipes. Add it to Italian food like soups and pasta sauces or sprinkle it over your chicken or pot roast before putting it in the oven or crock pot. Transform any protein dish or ground beef recipe with a teaspoon or 4. I like to have it on hand and season all the recipes with it. It’s not overly spicy.
- Mixing it through a delicious tomato-based sauce, like San Marzano Tomato Sauce, gives you a quick and easy pizza sauce.
- Add one tablespoon of Italian seasoning into fathead dough when kneading to make an amazing Italian roll or keto pizza.
- Another favorite seasoning use is roasted potatoes! Toss chopped potatoes lightly with olive oil before sprinkling Italian seasoning over them and roasting.
Add to your favorite Italian dishes, like my Low FODMAP Instant Pot Spaghetti and Meatballs One-Pot Meal, my Low FODMAP Instant Pot Chicken Cacciatore, or my Low FODMAP Instant Pot / Slow Cooker Bolognese. Also works well with non-Italian dishes, like my Low FODMAP Instant Pot / Slow Cooker Beef Stew, or Low FODMAP Creamy Bacon Mushroom Chicken Thighs recipe.
Italian Dressing
All you have to do is mix 2 tablespoons of this seasoning blend with 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil and ⅔ cup of white wine vinegar and shake vigorously. Of course, you can use fresh herbs in place of the dried spices for the dressing, but I love being able to quickly grab my jar of Italian Seasoning mix. While it’s best if you use my Italian seasoning substitute, you can use a store-bought mix as well.

Avoiding Common Mistakes
Using onion salt and garlic salt is not recommended as it will add too much salt to the seasoning and overpower the herbs.
