Jennie Garth, the acclaimed star of Beverly Hills, 90210, has captivated audiences for decades, not only with her acting prowess but also with her openness about her personal journey toward health and wellness. Her transformation, marked by a significant weight loss and a renewed sense of vitality, serves as an inspiration to many. This article delves into the details of Jennie Garth's diet and exercise routine, highlighting the key elements that have contributed to her success.
A Turning Point: Choosing Herself
Garth's journey began when she realized she was unhappy with her health and physique after turning 41. This realization prompted her to make a conscious decision to prioritize her well-being. For Jennie Garth, the phrase “I choose me” started out as a line in a script but became so much more - first her personal quest for contentment and gratitude and, later, a call for others to follow suit. “I reached a point where I realized I wasn’t feeling my best,” Garth shared in an interview. “I wanted to be healthier, feel better, and have more energy to keep up with my kids.”
The Power of a Balanced Diet
Garth's weight loss regimen is rooted in common sense and good habits. She combined intense workouts with a clean diet to lose the weight and keep it off. “I’m just taking care of myself. Eating less, exercising more, drinking a lot of coconut water,” she told PEOPLE. Garth enjoys a nutritious plant-based diet. “I started with the basics-cutting out processed foods and focusing on clean eating,” Jennie explained. She switched to a whole-foods-based diet, emphasizing lean proteins, vegetables, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.
Sample Meals
- Breakfast: “[For breakfast] I eat oats in almond milk, and add almond slivers, blueberries, strawberries, chia seeds on top,” she tells The Beet. “But I eat the oats right after I pour the oat milk on them, even before they are softened. I love the crunch of it." She also enjoys smoothies packed with nutrients. "I am a smoothie person,” Garth says. “I love to get it all in a smoothie first thing in the morning, right after I’ve worked out.” Protein, she says, is the star of every smoothie she whips up. “My quest for the day is protein and fiber. So I’m just looking for any way to get vegan protein and lots of fiber into my diet.” Garth’s favorite add-ins include: plant-based vegan protein powder, MCT oil, coconut oil, hyaluronic acid and maca root powder. One recipe that’s become her go-to is as follows: 1 banana, ½ cup kale, ½ cup spinach, ½ cup frozen blueberries, 1 tablespon almond butter, 1 tablespoon chia & hemp seeds, 1 teaspoon honey, Unsweetened almond milk, MCT oil, Vegan protein powder, Ice.
- Lunch: “[For lunch] a salad. On a day when I am eating well, everything I can find goes into my salad: Avocado, tomatoes, nuts, and for sweetness, I like to add green apple into the mix."
- Dinner: We love Mexican food in our house, and though it’s not the healthiest, you can make a taco with lots of vegetables. For dinner, she would have lighter meals like porridge or vegetable-based dishes."
Healthy Snacking
One of Jennie’s recent go-to snacks, especially when work travel, meetings and life pull her in all different directions, has been a green apple with unsweetened almond butter. Easy to take on the go yet healthy and delicious, it’s the perfect solution for when hunger strikes between meals.
Portion Control and Hydration
One of the key elements in Jennie’s weight loss strategy was her commitment to portion control. I also love to get outside any chance I get, and right now I am into golf!” she tells The Beet. “It’s a great activity both mentally and physically because you can walk the course. On her days off, she likes taking her dogs on long walks through the hilly streets of Los Angeles.
Weight Training
“I’ve been working out really hard,” Garth told Health. “I’ve been weight training with a trainer three days a week… I really never sit down. I mean, that’s basically the secret. Lifting wasn’t a part of Garth's regimen until Cohen encouraged her to get into it a few years ago. Now, she’s pushing her body to do things she didn’t know it was capable of. “As we age, we lose bone density, and for me, I want to keep my muscles strong,” she told TODAY, adding that she “used to hate working out. But now I really do look forward to it because I know how good I feel after I do it. When it comes to working with the heavier weights, Garth says, “I usually do like 12 to 15 reps a set.”
Full-Body Workouts
Each time, Garth does full-body workouts that challenge her core, upper body and legs. “He doesn’t do one or the other,” Garth explains. “So, I’m full body sore the next day, all day, every day of my life.”
Making it a Family Affair

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Self-Acceptance
As a public figure, Jennie Garth was not immune to the pressures and criticisms about her appearance. She admitted that her body image had fluctuated over the years, and at times, she felt the weight of society’s expectations. However, with her weight loss journey came a new sense of self-acceptance. She stopped worrying about fitting into societal molds of beauty and started focusing on what made her feel healthy and happy. Jennie’s new approach to health didn’t come without its challenges, especially when critics weighed in on her appearance. “The rollercoaster of body image issues is real, and it’s something I’ve had to learn to cope with,” she said.
A Holistic Approach to Wellness
Jennie’s Pro Tip: Choose yourself by starting each day on a nutritious note to set yourself up for a productive, feel-good day. Prioritizing her health amidst a packed, ever-changing schedule is a must for Jennie. For Jennie, working out has become a powerful declaration of self-care that she works into her weekday calendar three times per week. By dedicating this time to herself and focusing on building strength, she leaves the gym feeling confident and grateful, setting a positive tone for her day and reinforcing her commitment to health. On the weekends, she prioritizes light exercise outdoors, which delivers the added benefit of having time to unplug, breathe and recharge. These moments of self-care don’t have to come in the form of being active, though. After all, there are so many ways to prioritize yourself in the day-to-day. Some of the ways Jennie does so include: Keeping a journal. Take a few minutes each day to jot down your inner thoughts and feelings. It’s cathartic, we promise. Or switch it up and write down what you’re thankful for each day like Jennie does in her gratitude journal. Drawing a bath. As basic as it may seem, this is one of Jennie’s preferred ways to disconnect from life’s busyness in order to center herself. Perhaps most importantly is one-on-one time with the people you love most in life. For Jennie, that means checking in with her daughters daily, whether through FaceTime or in person. This connection and support from and with her family is one of her favorite times of the day.

Staying Motivated
Garth is thinking about entering a fitness competition as her next goal. “I just want to improve my posture. I want to have my core strength so I don’t get lumpy,” she told TODAY. “I live to the max, so I don’t want to slow down. I always say if you’re slower, you’re not growing. Garth says she’s more inclined to stick to her workout goals if she actually likes the process of achieving them. “Movement always allows me to reset my mind while taking care of my body. A good workout always clears my head,” Garth wrote on Instagram. Getting stronger keeps her motivated.
Addressing Arthritis
Arthritis runs in Garth’s family, which is why she was happy to partner with Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel. “I always knew that arthritis ran in my family, so it was something that was kind of on my radar,” she tells New Beauty. “I started to feel some stiffness in my hips and knees and I wanted to ignore the signs; I associated it with getting older and I wasn’t interested in that.
