It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jeffrey Dieterle of Nutley, New Jersey, who passed away on July 9, 2024, at the age of 58. Jeff's life was a testament to his passion for music, his dedication to education, and his love for his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in Montclair, N.J. to Edward and Dorothy Dieterle, Jeff was the youngest of 5 children. He lived in Bloomfield before settling in Nutley. Jeff's musical journey began at the age of 14 when he discovered the trombone. His talent quickly flourished, earning him a place in numerous high school honor bands. In his junior year, Jeff's exceptional abilities were recognized with a scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts and Music in Michigan.
Higher Education and the Walt Disney All-American College Band
From Interlochen, Jeff received a full scholarship to Michigan State University, where he proudly became a member of the Spartan Marching Band. His dedication and skill led to his acceptance into the prestigious Walt Disney All-American College Band in 1987, marking a significant milestone in his early career. In 1987, Jeff was accepted into the prestigious Walt Disney All-American College Band.
A Career in Music Education
Jeff's commitment to music extended beyond performance. He earned his degree in Music Education from Michigan State University and dedicated 29 years to the Bloomfield Public School System. During his tenure, he served as the high school Band Director and later as an elementary instrumental music teacher, shaping the lives of countless students through his passion for music.
Total Soul and Soul Party Sound
Jeff's entrepreneurial spirit and love for music led him to found Total Soul, a party band known for its exceptional musicians and singers. As the leader of Total Soul, Jeff poured his heart and soul into creating the perfect entertainment experience for audiences. He also established Soul Party Sound, where he served as the lead sound engineer for many local bands, further contributing to the local music scene.

A Talented Trombonist and Collaborator
As a talented trombonist and member of the Chops Horn section, Jeff had the opportunity to perform with a wide range of renowned artists. His career highlights include collaborations with John Legend, Mariah Carey, Patty Labelle, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys (MTV Unplugged), Ray Chew (Macy’s 4th of July Celebration), Lesley Gore, Bowzer of Sha Na Na, Michael J. Fox & Joann Jett (Jackie Robinson Foundation), and R&B artists at The Apollo, among many others.
Family Life
Jeff was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving, supportive, and patient wife, Marie (nee: Farese), and his adoring sons: Eric Edward, Bryan Philip, and Roger Mark. He was incredibly proud of his sons and welcomed Natalie Fariello (Eric’s fiancé), and Emma Logan (Bryan’s fiancé) into his family with open arms.
He is also survived by his cherished siblings, Edward Jr., Gail Pabst, Lynn Taylor (Kenneth Taylor), and Janice Lloyd. He was loved by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Jeff was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Dorothy (nee: Brown), his brothers-in-law, Arthur Pabst, and John Lloyd, and his beloved pets, Louie and Tiki.

Jeffrey "Jeff" Dieterle, 58, of Nutley, N.J., passed away on July 9th, 2024. at Levandoski-Grillo Funeral Home, 44 Bay Ave., Bloomfield, N.J. Cremation will be private at Rosedale Crematory, Montclair, N.J. Valet parking will be available at the funeral home for the visitation.
