Hailing from Mississippi, Jaheim Oatis arrived at the University of Alabama as a highly-touted four-star recruit and one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the nation. Alabama recruited Oatis when he weighed 417 pounds. Oatis had to make significant changes to his diet. He transitioned from eating "what I wanted" in high school to a more structured and healthy eating plan. According to Oatis, Miss Amy Bragg took away the bread and rice, so I eat a lot of vegetables, salad, baked chicken, shrimp and a lot of grilled food. Fried chicken, once a favorite, was replaced with grilled options.

The 4th Quarter Program

Every player at Alabama must go through the 4th Quarter program, a tough workout regiment during the offseason. Oatis credited his new diet under the Director of Performance Nutrition, Amy Bragg.

The Impact on the Field

The weight loss had a profound impact on Oatis's performance. He noticed a significant difference in his explosiveness, short-area quickness, and power. Oatis said he’s been able to play quicker on his feet and in addition to an improvement with his breathing, Oatis has given the Tide a formidable blockade in the running game to clog the middle of an offensive line.

Freshman Success

Oatis's hard work paid off quickly. He started fall camp at 342 pounds, eventually cracking the starting lineup by Week 3 against Louisiana-Monroe. He earned 10 starts as a freshman, sharing the starting job at nose tackle with DJ Dale. He received All-SEC Freshman Team honors from the league's coaches after totaling double-digit tackles. The combination of his size and quickness kept him in the rotation consistently, becoming the only first-year freshman on the roster to total double-digit tackles.

Nick Saban acknowledged Oatis's impact early on, stating, "Well, look, the first thing about being a good defensive lineman at whatever position you play is you need to be hard to block. So if I was gonna say something simple without getting too technical, I would say he was hard to block."

Will Anderson Jr., a top defensive player for the Crimson Tide, was impressed by Oatis's dedication. "I’m very excited about Jaheim," Anderson said. "He’s great. He comes to work every day. He’s a hard worker and you know a lot of big guys, they would complain about being that big and having to lose that type of weight. But he came here, head down, worked hard, lost the weight."

Oatis continued his transformation. Oatis is now 316 pounds, which equals a 100-pound weight loss transformation from where he was a year ago. He has documented his journey on social media, tweeting updates and expressing his positive feelings. He said, “Started this journey just a bit over a year ago at 417lbs now 316lbs and I feel amazing.”

Looking Ahead

As Oatis prepares for his sophomore season, he is focused on taking on a more central role on the Crimson Tide defense. He is also becoming more vocal in the locker room, embracing a leadership role. Currently, Oatis’ “goal” when he steps on a scale is 330 pounds.
