Bishop Eddie Long's dramatic weight loss journey became a topic of widespread discussion, marked by inspiration, curiosity, and also controversy. In 2016, Long shed over 100 pounds, sparking questions about his methods and the role of faith in his transformation. This article delves into the details of Long’s journey, uncovering the possible secrets behind his success, the controversies surrounding his choices, and the lasting impact of his story.
A Public Figure in the Spotlight
Eddie Long was the pastor of Atlanta's mega-church, New Birth Missionary Church, which at its height boasted more than 25,000 members. Long was a vocal pastor against churches accepting gay members, even leading a march through the city with thousands affirming his beliefs and calling homosexuality a “spiritual abortion.” In 2010, four young men from the congregation accused him of coercing them into sexual activities, often on church trips, but Bishop Eddie Long settled the case quietly.
Initial Observations and Concerns
In August, Bishop Eddie Long shared a video of himself looking much thinner, prompting concern and speculation about his health. On December 28, images and footage surfaced of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader, who had been out of the limelight since he revealed he was struggling with a "health challenge" in September. His new drastic weight loss was captured on video during an appearance he made before his New Birth Missionary Church in Lithonia, Georgia. The appearance was highly anticipated as it was said that he was in hospice in the months prior.
Long's Explanation and Health Challenge
Long addressed his health in September, stating, "I am recovering from a health challenge that I trust God to deliver me from." He added, "It is unrelated to the eating for life diet consisting of mostly raw vegetables that I am continuing, as part of a holistic approach to good health. At this time my family and I are requesting that you respect our privacy."
In October, Long said, “I’ve been on a journey and just recalibrating myself,” Long said at New Birth Oct. 9. “And like I said, I had some health issues and God has healed me. Long did not clarify whether he was speaking of a spiritual healing or a physical healing.

Plant-Powered Diet: The Cornerstone
Central to Long’s weight loss was his adoption of a plant-based diet. He embraced a “life diet,” eliminating processed foods, meat, and dairy from his plate. Long believed that this plant-rich regimen held the key to unlocking improved well-being and achieving his weight loss goals. Long’s remarkable weight loss journey, fueled by a raw vegan diet, has become a beacon of inspiration for those striving to improve their health and well-being.
Driven by a desire for longevity, Long embraced a diet centered around unprocessed plant foods. By eliminating processed foods, animal products, and sugary beverages, he reversed years of weight gain and regained his youthful energy. Long’s transition to a raw vegan lifestyle was a transformative experience. He devoured fresh fruits, leafy greens, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, deriving nourishment from their raw state. The result was not only significant weight loss but also enhanced physical and mental vitality.
The Power of Plant-Based Nutrition
Raw vegan diets emphasize whole, unprocessed plant foods, providing a plethora of nutrients essential for optimal health. By consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, individuals may experience:
- Improved digestion and nutrient absorption
- Reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
- Enhanced energy levels and overall well-being
Long’s dietary shift extended beyond personal transformation. He encouraged his congregation and beyond to explore the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, promoting the incorporation of more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into their diets.
Controversy and Curiosity: Health Concerns
Long’s dramatic weight loss raised eyebrows and sparked speculation about his health. Despite rumors of a terminal illness, Long remained optimistic, acknowledging a "health challenge" without revealing its nature. His weight loss sparked discussions about the potential role of diabetes, cancer, or hormonal imbalances.

Examining Long’s Legacy
While sending condolences to his family, church community and all impacted by his life and passing, it's important to examine Long’s legacy. “The Black Church” isn’t one huge congregation of sameness clapping tambourines. It’s nuanced like us as a people. There are the Baptists with the big hats. The Methodists offering a sprinkle for baptism, leaving you and your new hairdo saved. The Pentecostal who shake the walls with the spirit. The church of Christ members singing a capella and many more. And they all have to be accountable for how we treat all of God’s children. The enduring intolerance of our churches to those who are gay has to be addressed. The hypocrisy of people expressing God’s love to have such strong disdain of any “sinners” expected to have “sexual sins” has long been problematic. The hatred towards gay men and women - often from people who claim to be on God’s team- leaves them more vulnerable to not having conversations on healthy sexuality. It also fuels the high rate of suicide among gay teens.

We must follow God through our church leaders and hold them accountable for their actions. Some churches are inclusive of all of God’s children. Those of us who love God cannot stay silent when his name is used to vilify his children. Love starts with accepting each other and protecting each other from harm. Our faith as a people got us through the atrocities of enslavement and disenfranchisement.
