Diet Mountain Dew Frostbite Review: A Deep Dive into the Icy Refreshment

Mountain Dew, known for its myriad of flavors and sugary energy boosts, continuously introduces new and exciting variations to tantalize taste buds. Among these is Diet Mountain Dew Frostbite, a flavor worth exploring for both its unique profile and limited availability. This article delves into a comprehensive review of Diet Mountain Dew Frostbite, considering its taste, ingredients, and overall appeal, while also comparing it to other Mountain Dew flavors.

Unveiling Diet Mountain Dew Frostbite

Diet Mountain Dew Frostbite is a flavor exclusive to Walmart stores across the country and available for a limited time. It comes in a 20 oz bottle. Like most nouveau Mtn Dew flavors, this too has a taste reminiscent of a liquefied Now and Later, which, at least in my opinion, is never a bad thing. But, still, Frost Bite has got a deeply sweet seafaring edge to it that, like the chompers on the non-mountainous mascot, will cut deeply to the bone. Or, given the soda’s oh-so high added sugar content, it might shear the white enamel off with each seriously addictive gulp.

Taste and Flavor Profile

The official brand line is “a burst of icy refreshment and cool lemon,” which while accurate, doesn’t tell the whole story. Upon my first sip, I sensed a smoothness that’s frankly uncommon when it comes to this type of drink. Mtn Dew themselves claim that there’s a bit of lemon in the flavor profile (omg I’m so sorry), but frankly, they aren’t to be trusted. It’s hard to put the flavor into words, but if you’ve ever had Mtn Dew Voltage, I’d say it’s a less intense version of that. The Dew people have taken pains the last few years to find smoothness in their new releases, adding balance to their hyper sweet flavors that still dominate the market.

Some reviewers have described the flavor as a "cool melon," noting that it is mostly just sweet. However, it's also been pointed out that the sweetness is balanced, making it more agreeable to drinkers who struggle with overbearing sweetness.

Similarities to Other Mountain Dew Flavors

Mtn Dew has been obsessed with “blue” flavors recently and as a fan of Liberty Brew, it seems they have finally come close to cracking this code. There’s not much to say about the color and smell, it’s blue in the most wonderful way. To be honest, if you’re a collector or stockpile Dew drinker, I wouldn’t put Frost Bite next to your cans of Liberty Brew, as you might not even realize you picked the wrong one until you’ve had a taste.

Availability and Exclusivity

Mountain Dew Frost Bite was released this month as a Walmart exclusive, which is a new approach to the “exclusive” Dew concept. Mtn Dew releasing an exclusive fountain drink is a long used concept, the most famous being the Baja Blast flavor that originated at Taco Bell locations. Frost Bite however, is being released as a cans and bottles flavor, but only within the confines of America’s biggest supermarket chain.

A Glimmer of Hope in a Challenging Time

Ok, I’ll avoid the gloom and doom for the rest of the article, pandemic or not, this soda was very intriguing. Verdict: Mtn Dew Frost Bite is just as refreshing as the sugar addicted shark on the label promises it to be. Frost Bite is the lighter side of Blue Dews like Voltage and Liberty Brew, and will be much more agreeable to drinkers that struggle with the overbearing sweetness. Pour it over ice or have it right out of the can, Frost Bite is a sliver of hope during a really crappy time in our world’s history. Buy it with your essentials, and enjoy it at home as you hunker down. If you happen to get some, try it out with some light liquors. When we all meet up again, no matter how long that might be from now, let’s make it a Frost Bite cocktail party, as we’ve surely got some time on our hands to get it right.

Other Mountain Dew Flavors: A Comparative Overview

To provide a broader context, let's examine some other Mountain Dew flavors and how they stack up against Frostbite:

  • Mountain Dew Zero Sugar: This option succeeds at removing an obstacle for calorie and sugar-conscious drinkers from Doing the Dew without sacrificing Diet Dew’s flavor. The color is identical, though I detected a slightly sharper citrus scent in the Zero Sugar sample. There’s a rounder flavor to the original Diet Dew, with Zero Sugar once again being a bit more acidic.

  • Mountain Dew Maui Burst: Currently a Dollar General exclusive, Maui Burst is described as, “Dew with a blast of pineapple flavor." The pineapple is the star of the show, while the citrus Dew flavors take a backseat. Maui Burst’s flavor is like what I imagined it would be - a Mountain Dew that tastes like it’s been mixed with some pineapple juice. For me, it has easily jumped into my top five favorite Dew varieties of all time, which include Pitch Black, Code Red, and, of course, the original one.

  • Mountain Dew VooDEW: With traditions that date to back to classical New Orleans and their love of that old religious practice of Vodou, the cursed folks at Mtn Dew have supposedly captured the sugar-filled gris-gris and poured it carefully into their recyclable bottles and shipped it to modern stores just in time for Halloween. It’s described as a “mystery flavor,” probably to add to the pulse-pounding fear when guzzling the brew. The VooDEW moniker is a tad misleading, delivering a sugary soda that, like a diabolical voodoo doll, hits all the main sweet spots and then a few of the not-so-sweet ones.

  • Mountain Dew Voltage: Something had to be the worst flavor of Mountain Dew, and Mountain Dew Voltage is it. It’s supposed to be blue raspberry and citrus flavor, apparently, but there’s no tang whatsoever.

  • Mountain Dew Major Melon: This extremely pink Mountain Dew flavor purports to be “charged with watermelon,” which is pure gibberish. The watermelon flavor is super artificial.

  • Mountain Dew Baja Blast: The original Mountain Dew Baja Blast is shockingly subtle in flavor (not a sentence I ever thought I’d write). It’s very sweet, yes, but it’s too nuanced to be turned into a diet soda. All Mountain Dew Baja Blast Zero tastes like is generic diet soda. It’s sweet and bland.

  • Mountain Dew Thrashed Apple: Mountain Dew Thrashed Apple actually tastes like a green apple! It’s super sweet, but it has a nice tartness that balances it out.

  • Mountain Dew Code Red: The cherry flavor is sweet, fruity, and refreshing. I get why so many people go hard for Mountain Dew Code Red! It’s up there with the best Mountain Dew flavors.

  • Mountain Dew Pitch Black: It was formerly described as “Black Grape” but is now “Dark Citrus.” I don’t really know what either of these names mean, but I taste both grape and citrus in Pitch Black. I would happily drink a glass of this again.

  • Original Mountain Dew: It’s so sweet and citrusy and refreshing. If you don’t like the original Mountain Dew, why are you even reading this list?!

  • Mountain Dew Dark Berry Bash: Originally launched as a Circle K exclusive, you can now get this purple Mountain Dew flavor at Kroger-owned stores. It’s purported to be a berry-plum flavor, though it tastes pretty grape-y to me.

Mountain Dew Amp Game Fuel Zero

Last year, Mountain Dew rolled out Mtn Dew Amp Game Fuel to help gamers with alertness and accuracy. This year, the brand is offering Mtn Dew Amp Game Fuel Zero, a zero sugar, zero calorie, and zero carb version of the caffeinated drink. There are two flavors, Watermelon and Raspberry Lemonade, and both come in cans with the same resealable tab as the original Mtn Dew Amp Game Fuel. If you’re going to choose just one, might I suggest the latter over the former, unless you REALLY love artificial watermelon flavor. I mean, it’s a perfectly fine flavor, it’s not as sweet as candy, and it smells better than Charged Raspberry Lemonade, but it’s not the flavor I’d drink again. That honor goes to, obviously since it’s the only other flavor I’m writing about in this review, Charged Raspberry Lemonade. Although, for some reason, my taste buds and brain occasionally think they’re drinking a raspberry iced tea. Maybe it’s because the berry flavor reminds me of the Lipton Brisk Raspberry and the lemon flavor, which doesn’t really pop that much, makes me think of lemon iced tea. Well, whatever it tastes like - raspberry lemonade or raspberry iced tea - I prefer it over the watermelon one. In order to make this zero sugar, zero calorie, and zero carb version, an artificial sweetener arsenal of sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium is used. It’s noticeable in the watermelon one, but significantly less so with the other one. Both flavors provide 90 milligrams of sweet caffeine, which isn’t a lot in today’s world that has energy drinks of the same size that offer over 200 milligrams. But I found myself getting a boost from them. Your results may vary. Both Mtn Dew Amp Game Fuel Zero flavors are decent zero sugar energy drinks, but, unlike gaming and writing, it’s hard to equally compare them with the recent zero sugar energy drinks from Monster and Rockstar.
