Dave Navarro, the iconic guitarist of Jane's Addiction and former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has navigated a challenging journey in recent years, marked by a battle with long COVID, the profound grief of losing a close friend, and ultimately, a triumphant return to music and a renewed focus on health.
The Onset of Long COVID and Isolation
In September 2022, Jane's Addiction fans were taken by surprise with the announcement that original bassist Eric Avery would be rejoining the band after a 12-year hiatus. However, this news was coupled with the revelation that Dave Navarro would be taking an indefinite break to recover from long COVID. As Perry Farrell, Jane’s frontman, explained to Rolling Stone, he had to consider the health and well-being of everyone involved in the crew and their families.
Navarro's absence led to a period of isolation and marked a significant shift in his life. His social media presence diminished, and he was replaced as the host of the reality competition show Ink Master. During this time, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age and later Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam filled the void left by Navarro in Jane’s Addiction.
Navarro described his symptoms as "overall fatigue," leading to him "not feeling like I had recovered." This led to increased time at home, isolation, and ultimately, depression. He characterized the experience as "pretty miserable for several years," involving visits to various doctors and trying both holistic and Western treatments.
Doubts and Conspiracy Theories
As Navarro disappeared from the public eye, rumors and speculation began to circulate among fans. Some even suggested that his absence was due to a relapse into drug addiction, given his well-documented history. However, Navarro refuted these claims, stating, "Drugs would not keep me from the stage. I might even have more experience playing loaded than sober with the band. So, in fact, I wish it was that problem, because there’s a solution to that problem."

He further emphasized that he had been playing with Jane's Addiction "high as fuck" for 25 years, implying that his absence was not drug-related.
The Impact of Taylor Hawkins' Death
Another factor contributing to Navarro's withdrawal was the death of Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the Foo Fighters. Navarro admitted that Hawkins's death deeply affected him, making it difficult to pick up a guitar for a long time. He described Hawkins as "such an inspiring artist" and "one of those humans that everybody loved."
Navarro and Hawkins, along with Chris Chaney, had recently finished recording an album for their band NHC before Hawkins's untimely passing. The album remains unreleased, but Navarro expressed hope that it would eventually see the light of day, highlighting Hawkins's exceptional musicianship.
Rejoining Jane's Addiction and the Road to Recovery
Despite the challenges he faced, Navarro eventually found his way back to music and Jane's Addiction. When the band announced a European tour earlier this year, they promoted it with a poster featuring the original lineup from around 1988. This sparked speculation about Navarro's return, which was confirmed when he walked onstage at a small London club in May.
Navarro described feeling "extremely nervous and excited" about playing with Jane's Addiction again after so many years. He emphasized the unique chemistry of the original lineup, stating, "It was a tiny stage with no production, no lights. It was just four guys playing music, and I couldn’t have been happier with it."

He also acknowledged the contributions of other bass players who had filled in for Eric Avery over the years, including Chris Chaney, Duff McKagan, and Flea. However, he emphasized that Avery's presence brought a unique groove to the band, as he had written the majority of the bass lines for their songs.
To prepare for the tour, Navarro committed to doing "whatever it takes" to be available, including following any diet and seeing any doctor. He acknowledged that long COVID remains "problematic," with the "jury still out on what’s the right treatment."
A Focus on Health and Wellness
In addition to his return to music, Navarro has also made significant strides in improving his overall health and well-being. He shared that he had been focusing on his art during his time away from the band, participating in art shows and keeping himself busy.
Navarro also revealed that he is now living much healthier in terms of exercise, diet, and more. He emphasized the importance of consistency and listening to his body. As he told The Daily Meal, "I think in order to do what we do, to have the endurance to do what we do and what comes along with it, there’s no better way for me to kind of expunge the stress while at the same time make myself strong enough to stay active."
He typically goes to the gym six days a week, incorporating yoga, cardio, and light weights into his routine. While he doesn't follow a specific diet, he avoids dairy products and tries to limit his sugar intake. However, he also allows himself occasional indulgences, stating, "If I’ve eaten clean all week and I’m at a birthday party and the cake looks great, I’ll do it. F**k it."

Navarro's commitment to health extends beyond exercise and diet. He also emphasized the importance of mental well-being, particularly in the age of social media. He urged future generations to "focus and support each other, as opposed to taking each other down," and to promote "a little more acceptance and tolerance overall."
New Music and Future Plans
With the original lineup of Jane's Addiction reunited, fans are eagerly anticipating new music. Navarro has confirmed that they have recorded material and that a new album is "more than likely going to happen." He stated that he doesn't know the specific release model, but is excited about the prospect of creating new music with his bandmates.
Navarro also expressed his desire to keep Jane's Addiction going, citing the influence of bands like Rush on his musical development. He acknowledged the challenges and obstacles that the band has faced over the years, but also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue making music with his longtime friends.
A Message of Hope and Resilience
Dave Navarro's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the power of music and human connection. Despite facing significant health challenges, personal loss, and public scrutiny, he has emerged stronger and more focused than ever before. His return to Jane's Addiction and his commitment to a healthy lifestyle serve as an inspiration to fans and anyone facing adversity.
Navarro's journey reminds us that it is possible to overcome obstacles, pursue our passions, and find joy and fulfillment in life, even in the face of difficult circumstances. His message of acceptance, tolerance, and support for future generations offers a hopeful vision for the future.
