Christi Lukasiak's Journey: From Dance Moms to Body Image Advocate

Christi Lukasiak, known for her role on Dance Moms, has become an inspiring figure, not only for her television appearances but also for her openness about personal struggles. Her journey towards self-acceptance and mental well-being has resonated with many, particularly concerning body image and eating disorders. This article explores Christi's experiences, her advocacy, and her message of hope and self-acceptance.

Early Struggles with Body Image

Lukasiak revealed that she struggled with body dysmorphia and eating disorders for years before publicly addressing it. It wasn't until September 2021 that she openly discussed her experiences on social media. She described being caught in a cycle of comparing herself to others, particularly those she saw on Instagram. "I was just constantly looking at how other people’s bodies looked," Lukasiak said. "I was stuck in an endless cycle of like, ‘Why don’t I look like that?'"

Living in Pittsburgh, she felt a constant pressure to conform to an ideal, exacerbating her insecurities. "It’s like everything I saw on Instagram while I was living in Pittsburgh was standing in front of my face," Lukasiak explained.

Seeking Help and the Road to Recovery

Recognizing the need for professional help, Lukasiak sought treatment at a rehabilitation center for eating disorders. However, she soon realized that recovery was not a one-time fix. "When I first got home, I thought, ‘OK, I’m done, it’s fixed. I’m good for the rest of my life,’" Lukasiak said. She understood that it was an ongoing process.

Sharing her struggles with her parents was a significant step. "I didn’t tell them in an easy way," Lukasiak admitted. Over time, she felt more mentally stable and realized she needed support. "And so that’s when I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I should tell my parents.’ And I think I just started to get to a better place mentally, just over time. And I realized that I wanted help."

The Power of Sharing and Advocacy

Going public with her struggles has been a crucial part of Lukasiak's healing process. The positive responses she received from others validated her decision to be open. "Just reading the comments and hearing people say, ‘Thank you so much,'" Lukasiak said, emphasizing the impact of shared experiences.

Lukasiak's message is one of hope and self-acceptance. "It’s so important to actually take the time and the space to learn to accept yourself and to learn to appreciate yourself," Lukasiak said. She emphasizes that acknowledging one's struggles is not a sign of weakness but a step towards healing. "It doesn’t mean that you’re broken or incapable of handling yourself," Lukasiak said.

Understanding Body Image Issues

Body image issues are complex and multifaceted. As Harriger explained, "It’s never just one thing." Genetics, family influence, peer pressure, and media portrayals all contribute to how individuals perceive their bodies. The pressure to conform to certain beauty standards, especially in environments like college campuses or cities with strong social media presence, can be intense. "I’ve heard a lot of students tell me that they feel pressure to be ‘bikini ready’ all the time because they live near a beach," Harriger said.

Chris Ganey, a spiritual life advisor, noted that men, especially college-aged men, often struggle with body image issues but tend to suppress them. "Specifically guys, and especially freshmen college-age guys, like to bury that," Ganey said. He added that the ideal body image is often influenced by one's social circles. "Depending on what you’re associating yourself with, it would not determine your body image but determine the ideal for your body image," Ganey said.

Support Systems and Resources

Lukasiak encourages those struggling with body image issues to seek help and remember that they are not alone. "Other people are struggling, but that doesn’t take away from my struggle and that doesn’t mean I don’t deserve health as well," Lukasiak said.

Ganey recommends that students share their concerns with RAs, SLAs, the Counseling Center, and other available resources. He emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and recognizing one's unique worth. "You’re created in an intricate way to be the unique person that you are and whatever that looks like," Ganey said.

Kelly Hyland's Battle with Breast Cancer

Kelly Hyland, another prominent figure from Dance Moms, has also shared her personal health journey. In May, she publicly announced her breast cancer diagnosis, revealing that she was diagnosed with invasive carcinoma stage 1, grade 3 after discovering a lump in March.

The Diagnosis and Initial Reactions

"The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” she told E! News in an interview at the time. Eight months after getting the all-clear from a previous health scare, Kelly found a lump in her breast. "I found a lump in my breast and booked myself a mammogram," she shared. "I was shocked that it had grown that quickly."

Support System and Treatment Plan

Kelly has a strong support system in place, with her children Brooke Hyland, Josh Hyland, and Paige Hyland taking turns accompanying her to chemotherapy appointments. "All of my former costars are aware of what is going on," Kelly shared. "I’m very lucky to have such great friends and a flexible job that allows me to keep some normalcy during all of this."

Currently undergoing her second of six rounds of chemotherapy, Kelly will follow those treatments with surgery and radiation, and then 11 more chemotherapy treatments. She is also using a scalp cooling system called Amma in the hopes of preserving her hair during treatments.

Preparing for Hair Loss

Knowing that hair loss is a potential side effect of chemotherapy, Kelly visited Pittsburgh's Serenity Wig Salon with her daughters Paige and Brooke. "Both the salon and my girls being there with me made me feel comfortable and more confident," she explained. "They’re customizing the wig I chose to fit my head, coloring and styling it to my liking, and even added some baby hairs for a more realistic look."

Strength and Gratitude

Kelly draws strength from her children. "My children get me through the hard moments," Kelly said. "I keep telling myself that I need to be strong for them," she explained. "I couldn’t be prouder of my daughters and my son," she added. "Despite all of the craziness that they have experienced throughout their childhood, they’ve all grown into mature, humble, fun-loving adults. They’re the best kids I could ask for and I’m beyond grateful to have them in my corner during all of this and beyond!"

Paige celebrated her mother's strength, writing, “Starting to realize there’s nothing my mom can’t do." Kelly shared her milestone, "I got to ring the bell today. This was the end of my first treatment… next steps surgery, 20 radiation and 11 more treatments."
