Understanding Weight Loss Surgery Options

Capital Health Plan offers several surgical procedures designed to help you achieve significant and sustained weight loss. These procedures work by modifying your digestive system, helping you feel full faster and absorb fewer calories. The specific procedure recommended for you will depend on your individual needs and health profile, and will be determined through a thorough consultation with your surgeon. During this consultation, your surgeon will explain each option in detail, often using visual aids to enhance your understanding. Common procedures include:

  • Gastric Bypass: This surgery alters the digestive pathway, leading to significant weight loss. It is a more complex procedure with a higher potential for complications, but it often results in greater weight loss.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: This procedure involves removing a portion of the stomach, reducing its size and capacity. It is generally considered less invasive than gastric bypass and has a lower risk profile.
  • Adjustable Gastric Banding: This option involves placing an adjustable band around the stomach to restrict food intake. It is the least invasive option, offering more gradual weight loss and allowing for adjustments as needed.

The choice of surgery is a collaborative decision made with your dedicated healthcare team, ensuring that your individual needs and preferences are taken into account.

Pre-Operative Evaluation: Setting the Foundation for Success

Before surgery, you'll undergo a comprehensive evaluation to ensure you're a suitable candidate and to tailor your plan accordingly. This involves reviewing your medical history, conducting physical examinations, and possibly undergoing psychological evaluations to assess your readiness for the commitment of this transformative journey.

Post-Operative Support: Your Ongoing Partnership for Success

Support extends far beyond the surgery itself. The program includes:

  • Regular Follow-Up Appointments: Monitoring your progress and addressing any concerns.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Ongoing dietary guidance to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Capital Health's Outpatient Nutrition Counseling Service provides comprehensive nutrition assessment and education, including individualized nutrition consultation and/or group instruction for individuals who require medical nutrition therapy. Nutritional outcomes are monitored and optimized through periodic visits with our nutrition experts. Registered Dietitians can be seen in the Outpatient Nutrition area at each campus, as well as in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Healthstart, the Dialysis Center, and various other clinics within Capital Health. Certified Diabetes Educators, as well as Certified Renal Specialists, are on staff for expert diabetes/renal nutrition counseling and/or general instruction on diabetes management.
  • Psychological Support: Addressing emotional challenges and fostering positive long-term habits.
  • Support Groups: Connecting with others on similar journeys for shared experience and encouragement.

The Power of Support Groups

Connecting with others who understand your journey is incredibly valuable in maintaining motivation and fostering a sense of community. Capital Health Plan's support groups provide a safe space to share experiences, exchange tips, and celebrate success.

Capital Health's Nutrition Services

Capital Health provides comprehensive initial nutrition assessment for a variety of patient types, including those identified to be at nutrition risk, having abnormal nutrition laboratory values, on modified diets, or patients on alternate forms of nutrition support such as enteral (tube feedings) or parenteral (IV) nutrition.

The Sodexo Dietetic Internship is a nine-month supervised practice experience approved by the American Dietetic Association for graduates of four-year dietetic programs. Each year, five or more students are selected for entrance into the program. Our full-time training program consists of rotations in clinical nutrition, management of food service operations, and community nutrition. There is one-on-one supervision of students during rotations; and skill-based evaluations and feedback from preceptors are provided on an ongoing basis. Graduation from the program supports eligibility to sit for the registration exam offered by the American Dietetic Association.
