Bile aids in breaking down fats into smaller globules (emulsification) and helps absorb nutrients like fatty acids, cholesterol, and monoglycerides. Without bile, a significant portion of dietary fats would be lost in the stools, leading to nutritional deficiencies. Some bile is reabsorbed, while the remainder is excreted, giving color to the stools.

The most common disease of the gallbladder is cholecystitis, or inflammation, often due to gallstones (cholelithiasis). Gallstones can obstruct bile flow, leading to secondary infection, a condition known as cholestasis. While rare, cancer of the gallbladder and bile ducts can also occur.

This can also occur when fat and oil intake exceeds the body's digestive capacity. The accumulation of kapha can block the downward flow of apana vayu, increasing the upward flow of vata (udana) and causing belching.

  • Warm Water: Drink warm water to stimulate the digestive system and promote bile flow.
  • Cholagogues: Cholagogues stimulate the flushing of bile out of your gallbladder. Beets and bitters like kale, dandelion, arugula, chicory and aloe vera juice all fall into this category. Garlic and onion purges the liver and gallbladder as does vegetable juicing. The sour flavor of lemons, grapefruit and vinegar is also sludge-busting. The sour taste of plain yogurt makes it a cholagogue, and an excellent replacement to cheese or milk.

  • Exercise Regularly: Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or stretching exercises, to improve overall health and manage gallstone symptoms. Walking: Going for a brisk walk is a simple and effective way to get some exercise and improve overall health. Aim to walk for at least 30 minutes per day, most days of the week. Yoga and stretching: Practicing yoga or stretching exercises can help to improve flexibility and reduce stress, which can be beneficial for managing gallstone symptoms.
