Aubra EQ is a low-dose combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP) used to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) and thickening the cervical mucus, which blocks sperm from entering the uterus and reaching the egg. This comprehensive guide provides information on Aubra EQ, including its usage, potential side effects, precautions, and other essential details.
How Aubra EQ Works
Aubra EQ contains a blend of estrogen and progestin, which are synthetic forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy through several mechanisms:
- Preventing Ovulation: The hormones in Aubra EQ prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.
- Thickening Cervical Mucus: The hormones also thicken the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to travel through the cervix and reach the uterus.
- Thinning the Uterine Lining: Aubra EQ can also thin the lining of the uterus, making it less likely that a fertilized egg will implant.
Dosage and Administration
Aubra EQ is super easy to use. Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking Aubra EQ before bedtime or with their largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects.
Your pill pack contains 21 pills with active medication. It may also contain 7 reminder pills with no medication. Take one active pill (with hormones) once daily for 21 days in a row. If you are using a product with 28 tablets, take an inactive pill once daily for 7 days in a row after you have taken the last active pill unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you are using a product with 21 tablets, do not take any tablets for 7 days unless otherwise directed by your doctor. You should have your period during the fourth week of the cycle. After you have taken the last inactive tablet in the pack or gone 7 days without taking an active tablet, start a new pack the next day whether or not you have your period.
It is very important to keep taking this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. With certain brands of birth control pills, the amount of estrogen and progestin in each active tablet will vary at different times in the cycle. It is very important that you follow the package instructions to find the first tablet, start with the first tablet in the pack, and take them in the correct order. Do not skip any doses.

Precautions
Depending on your medical history, hormone-based birth control may not be for you.
- Smoking: WarningDo not use this medication if you smoke cigarettes/use tobacco and are over 35 years old. Smoking raises your risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, and high blood pressure from hormonal birth control (such as the pill, patch, ring). The risk of these serious problems increases with age and with the number of cigarettes you smoke.
- Allergies: Pretty much every medication comes with a tiny risk of allergies, including Aubra EQ. The symptoms are usually mild and include rashes, itching, dizziness.
- High Blood Pressure: If you have high blood pressure or take blood pressure medications, this medication is NOT for you. This medication may raise your blood pressure.
- Diabetes: If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar. Check your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination.
- Surgery: Tell your doctor if you just had or will be having surgery or if you will be confined to a bed or chair for a long time (such as a long plane flight). These conditions increase your risk of getting blood clots, especially if you are using hormonal birth control.
- Melasma: This medication may cause blotchy, dark areas on your face and skin (melasma). Sunlight may worsen this effect. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps.
- Contact Lenses: If you are nearsighted or wear contact lenses, you may develop vision problems or trouble wearing your contact lenses.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: This medication should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor right away. A small amount of this medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any estrogens (such as ethinyl estradiol, mestranol) or any progestins (such as norethindrone, desogestrel); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Drug Interactions
Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.
Some drugs may cause hormonal birth control to work less well by decreasing the amount of birth control hormones in your body. This effect can result in pregnancy. Examples include griseofulvin, modafinil, rifamycins (such as rifampin, rifabutin), ritonavir, St. Tell your doctor when you start any new drug, and discuss if you should use reliable backup birth control.
This medication may interfere with certain lab tests (such as blood clotting factors, thyroid), possibly causing false test results.
Important Considerations
- Effectiveness: The efficacy of Aubra EQ for contraception is viewed with concerns by many infectious diseases specialists, who generally rate it low at 2 out of 5. Dr. Sophia Yen, Pandia Health Co-Founder and young adult medicine specialist does NOT recommend women under the age of 30 take a “low dose” birth control pill. You need at least 30mcg of estrogen (Ethinyl estradiol) to protect your bones. Instead of Aubra Eq, Dr. Yen suggests women under 30 years old consider the slightly stronger version of this medication e.g.
- Generic Alternatives: If you choose to pay out-of-pocket, Aubra EQ is pretty affordable because it’s a generic brand. You can also save money by choosing one of several other Aubra generics, such as Lutera, Orsythia, Aviane, Vienva or Falmina. Generics have the SAME active ingredients and dosage as the name brand.
- Access: Aubra EQ should be available at just about any pharmacy in your area. It does require a prescription from a doctor, though. If you’re hesitant to approach your doctor about Aubra or simply prefer the privacy, convenience, and ease of the internet, give Pandia Health a try. We have experienced, birth control passionate, licensed doctors in every state we operate in. No insurance? Online prescription (skip the Dr.
- Weight Gain: Some women worry about weight gain when taking Aubra EQ and other birth control pills.
