After achieving fame on reality TV, many 90 Day Fiancé stars opt to use their earnings to undergo cosmetic surgery and enhance their appearance. Angela Deem, who first appeared on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days Season 2 with Michael Ilesanmi, was one of the first cast members to undergo bariatric surgery. However, when she revealed that she would be undergoing weight loss surgery on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, she did not receive as much support from her husband as she had hoped. Michael did not approve of the Georgia native going under the knife and insisted that he loved her regardless of her weight and size. Nevertheless, Angela believed that weight loss surgery was the best course of action for her health.
The Decision Behind Weight Loss Surgery
Angela Deem's decision to undergo weight loss surgery was driven by a combination of health concerns and a desire to improve her quality of life. "I noticed when I went to Nigeria last time, I was just putting on weight," Deem, 55, exclusively told Us Weekly. She added, "I mean, like, I think I gained 20, almost 25 pounds." This weight gain led to several health problems that significantly impacted her daily life.
Deem recounted that her "face was blowing up" and she was short of breath "all the time" before the operations. "I got to where I just didn’t have [any] energy," she told Us. "I couldn’t even walk in the grocery store with the kids to get groceries," she said. "I was out of breath and I knew it wasn’t a smoking issue. I know smoking doesn’t help, but this was something [where] you just know it was weight." She realized that her weight was not just a cosmetic issue but a significant impediment to her overall well-being.
"Nobody can say, ‘No, you’re not,’ because I have big boobs. And my big boobs [have] always been something that covered up my weight, you know what I mean? But for me, I noticed, and I was telling Michael, I said, ‘I’m getting bigger or swollen.’" She also noted the challenges of losing weight as she got older, saying, "maybe at 55 I said - or I was 54 at the time - I said, ‘You know, when you get older as women, we do gain weight.’ Or we go the opposite. I was going to weight gain. And it’s not [as] easy as it was when you’re younger to lose weight. And I never believed that until I got in that situation."
For Angela, the decision was also motivated by her desire to be more active and present for her family. "[The] kids do their school work and I can go outside with them and play." She also emphasized the long-term benefits of her decision, stating, "There's benefits behind doing it for myself because it also benefits the grandkids being around me longer and [Michael] and I being together longer."

The Procedures and Transformation
In March 2021, Angela confirmed to Us Weekly that she underwent gastric sleeve surgery in August 2020. The reality star eventually lost 90 pounds after having liposuction, a gastric sleeve procedure, and a breast reduction in August 2020.
Angela Deem debuted her new glam style and trim physique on July 29, and her transformation is truly jaw-dropping. Angela snapped a selfie with a high-ponytail, large pink hoops, and a low-cut white jumpsuit for her birthday dinner in Las Vegas.
Michael's Lack of Support
Despite her desire to improve her health and lifestyle, Angela faced a lack of support from her husband, Michael Ilesanmi. "Michael wasn’t very supportive, you know, ‘cause they don’t have surgeries over there I think," she explained. "Michael don’t see me as 55, like everybody else. Michael really sees me as his age. You know, that’s a good thing of it. But you need somebody, you know, your partner [to be] emotionally supportive. It was rough. I feel like I was in it alone."
Michael's disapproval stemmed from his cultural background and personal preferences. He insisted that he loved her regardless of her weight and size, but Angela felt that her health was a priority. This difference in opinion created tension in their relationship, and Angela felt unsupported during a challenging time.
Inspiration for Others
During the same tell-all, it seems Angela’s weight loss surgery journey inspired her 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? Angela replied, “Ahh you didn’t tell me! “Yeah, I’m excited. It’s been a long process,” the New Jersey native said, adding that her husband also was against the decision. Ronald shook his head before interjecting. “I mean, me and Tiffany, we had lots of arguments about that topic,” he said, revealing why he did not approve of his wife’s weight loss surgery. “Why not put in the work, that’s my mindset to it. “It’s not gonna be easy,” Tiffany argued.
