The All-In-One Master Tonic, also known as fire cider, is an age-old remedy and herbal health tonic with a sweet glow. Fire Cider Recipe
Ingredients:
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Fresh Horseradish
- Ginger and Turmeric
- Hot Peppers (Jalapeños work great)
- Fresh Herbs (Rosemary and thyme or a mixture of any of your favorite herbs)
- Cinnamon Sticks and Whole Black Peppercorns
- Raw Honey
Instructions:
- Peel and grate the horseradish. Add it to a 1.5-2 qt sized jar along with the sliced ginger, turmeric, jalapenos, onion, orange, lemon, and garlic. Then, add the fresh herbs, cinnamon sticks, and peppercorns.
- Pour the apple cider vinegar into the jar, making sure all the ingredients are fully covered. Add as much ACV as needed to cover the ingredients (this prevents the ingredients from spoiling).
- Seal the jar. Use a piece of parchment paper under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal, or a plastic lid if you have one.
- Shake the jar to combine the ingredients and store the jar in a dark, cool place for up to 4 weeks. Remember to shake the jar once daily to mix the ingredients. (I like to store the jar in the pantry where I can see it daily and remember to shake it)
- After three to four weeks, use a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain out the pulp and solid ingredients. Squeeze as much liquid out of the ingredients as you can.
- Stir in the honey until it is incorporated. Taste and add more honey to reach your desired sweetness. Your fire cider should taste hot, spicy, and sweet.
- Store sealed in an airtight jar. Keep in the refrigerator or in a dry, cool place for up to 6 months.
- Enjoy 1-2 tablespoons daily or use the fire tonic when cooking!
Tips for Making Master Tonic
- It is very important to use the freshest and most nutrient-dense produce as possible.
- Pick ingredients in garden or purchase as fresh as possible.
- Use what you have available.
- I always harvest the ingredients for the tonic shortly before making it. Here in Texas, our frost date is usually around the first few weeks in November, so I always plan to make master tonic in this time frame.
- Quart canning jars are the perfect size for tonic. This size of jar is manageable for me because I prefer to make several jars of tonic instead of just one large batch.
- My favorite way to seal the jars is to use a lid and ring with a piece of unbleached parchment between the lid and the jar to prevent the lid from rusting. A glass weight can be helpful to keep the contents below the brine.
- It is important to shake the jar daily to avoid spoilage from any ingredients floating above the brine. I like to put the ginger in the bottom of the jar because it tends to float.
- I like to store the tonic in the refrigerator but storing in a dark pantry works just as well.
- You should strain the tonic after 2-4 weeks of fermenting, especially if you have young children.
Dosage
- The daily recommendation is 1/2 tablespoons to 2 tablespoons per day to reap the benefits.
- If we aren’t feeling well then we will take 1 tablespoon three times a day. We have the best results if we take the tonic on an empty stomach, although it seems late evening is the most common time to start feeling symptoms. At the first sign of symptoms we take the tonic and go immediately to bed.
How to Use Fire Cider
- The most common way to use fire cider tonic is to drink 1-2 tablespoons each morning. You can sweeten it with a bit of honey before drinking it (which makes it super tasty!) or dilute it with water or juice.
- Make Salad Dressing: When a salad dressing calls for vinegar, like this orange vinaigrette, use your fire tonic instead. Or make a simple vinaigrette by mixing fire tonic, olive oil, dijon mustard, and a bit of honey!
- Use it as a marinade: It is perfect for marinating meat, fish, tofu, or whatever you like.
- Add it to your soup or chili for a little extra zest.
- You can use the strained mixture for cooking (combine with olive oil and sea salt as a marinade, for example).
Storage
- You can store your fire cire tonic in the fridge for several months.
- If you would like to take the extra step and sterilize, you can wash them thoroughly with soap and water. Allow them to dry on a clean towel. Then place on an oven-safe tray at 275°F for ten minutes. You can sterilize the metal lids by placing them in boiling water for 10 minutes.
Master Tonic Recipe
This recipe is especially beneficial during the Winter months and is best taken preventatively, but also treats coughs and colds.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup/1 small bulb Garlic, sliced
- 1 small to medium Onion, chopped or sliced
- ¼ cup/25g Ginger, peeled, grated or finely chopped
- ¼ cup/25g Horseradish, grated or sliced
- 2-4 Chilies, chopped or diced
- ¼ cup/30g fresh Turmeric, peeled and sliced or 1 tbsp. powder
- Apple cider or Kombucha vinegar to cover
- Optional extras: 1 lemon sliced, 1 sprig rosemary
Instructions:
- Fill a 1L jar ¾ full with the ingredients.
- Add apple cider or Kombucha vinegar to cover, close tightly and shake well.
- Keep the jar in a cool, dry place for about two weeks and shake every other day.
- After 2 weeks, strain and squeeze well to make sure all the juice comes out.
- Bottle and label.
- Take 1-2 tbsp daily in a little water or/and with some honey.

- Onion: Has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and helps enhance the immune system. It has high levels of vitamin C and is very effective against bacterial, viral and parasitic infection.
- Ginger: Has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and helps with inflammation in the body. Its anti-cancer potential is well documented.
- Horseradish: Is naturally rich in antioxidants and helps reduce inflammation and improve respiratory health (especially when fighting a sinus infection).
- Hot peppers: Contain capsicum which is high in vitamin C and iron and works to reduce inflammation, aid in weight loss, improve blood circulation, and improve bone health.
- Turmeric: Grate or slice it into dials.
- Cinnamon: Has an array of benefits and is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It contains anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties that help fight illness and disease.
- Honey: Has high anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Contains antimicrobial properties, which help kill bacteria and help lower blood sugar.
